alright so I'm booking next year's america trip soon

current plan is:

- fly to san francisco, 3 nights in SF
- drive to yosemite early morning of day 4, hike yosemite, stay overnight in yosemite, hike again the next day
- post-hike drive somewhere a few hours closer to vegas that has a decent brewery and stay overnight near there (current plan: Temblor in Bakersfield)
- next day drive through Death Valley to Las Vegas
- 7 nights in Las Vegas

does this sound vaguely sensible?

that sounds great except for staying overnight in bakersfield lol... bakersfield is awful... i mean it might be interesting to see a really armpit of usa that you never see.

if you have the time and willpower i'd highly recommend training so you can hike a long ways in yosemite. the long hikes are just mind blowing. and it's a great benefit to just get in good shape anyway.

but the short hikes in yosemite are awesome too. they are more crowded, but still just so beautiful, incredible amazing.

Beyond Burger with barbecue sauce, onions caramelized in bourbon, brown sugar, and vegan worcestershire sauce, topped with vegan blue cheese dressing, vegan bacon, and a whole wheat bun. With sweet potato and beet chips.

idk, I want to find somewhere en route from yosemite to vegas that has somewhere to sleep and a decent restaurant/brewery because I really don't want to do a long day's hiking followed by like seven hours driving because I will 100% die

yeah, i was looking at the map between yosemite and vegas, and i didn't see anything that i know is good bakersfield is an experience lol. i'll grant that. if i was visiting the usa i actually might like to experience a town like bakersfield. they love trump there!

while in yosemite mirror lake is great. it's right in the valley, so really easy and short.

vernal falls is also great. but they closed down my favorite part(i think) you used to be able to swim above the falls, but people were dying, going over the falls. you really have to make an effort to go over the falls, but people did *sigh*

vernal falls is a steep climb. if you're out of shape it will be tough, especially if it's a hot day. but it's also right in the valley, so maybe something like an hour each way. there is also a second fall you can keep going, but i never pushed myself that hard

by the way, i saw a completely insane russian man jump in that pool in at the bottom of the falls and swim across it. the waterfall wasn't as full then, so it wasn't as turbulent, but it was late october and the water is dangerously cold. i honestly think i would have died if i tried to do what he did.

and then of course half dome, if you are strong enough to hike like 13 hours round trip.

i think my favorite day in yosemite, me and my friend just sat by a stream in front of el capitan, no hiking or anything. we just sat there staring at the amazing rock and talking, drinking, snacking.

also just walking around the valley. you can see el capitan, half dome, yosemite falls, vernal falls, bridal veil falls, and it's flat and short. i think you can walk the whole loop in less than an hour. but that part is like disneyland. it's so crowded. if you hike up a bit it gets much emptier.

i did a night in bakersfield inbetween vegas and sf and I can confirm there's nothing there. Though i'm sure it'll function fine as a stop in between.

Yosemite and Vegas more or less approximate America’s high points as much as there are any

when I did my cross country POG road trip, I did Omaha to the coast of Oregon without stopping and it ended being like ~32 hours iirc

We also did Austin to Charlottesville non stop which was about 27

Driving across the USA in 2016 was honestly the best time of my life and I would do it again if I ever have the freedom and the exposible income (and no pandemic obv).

It's the old one. They deeply discounted the old ones right before they were releasing the new ones and I thought the old ones were just fine so I bought a few packs and froze them. I don't often feel the urge for a really burger-y burger, but I did this week, so I defrosted one of the packages.

Maybe I'm just missing something obvious, but how do I open a new thread with a poll? I've created plenty of new threads before, but I've never included a poll before. I checked the box to allow a poll and to choose the number of options (2) that can be voted on, but I can't find anywhere on the thread where I can actually identify the two choices that POGgers can vote on.

Can someone give me a little help on this?

i think you click on the add poll box, just like you did. then you have to take a leap of faith and click on "submit thread" with no poll!!!! *then* it takes you the page where you add the poll before the thread is actually submitted.

and the standard is it won't show who voted for what, which is no fun. you have to change it so that we can see who voted for what

Thanks, filthy! The leap of faith was scary, but I think it all worked out in the end.

book your room/site in yosemite way in advance. personally, i'd spend an extra day there and take off in the morning instead of staying over in bakersfield.

yosemite will probably be as crowded as a european capital in summer 2022.
