OK, for some strange reason I decided to actually look at my electric bill. I used 1177 kwh. I feel like my bill is high because I'm not even home most of the time and it's winter and my central unit uses gas. I have no idea wtf a kwh really means (like in terms of how long a light bulb is on or what my tv uses).

Anybody know this stuff?

I just googled no idea of accuracy

My cube is right between my first and second level managers and neither of them ever tell me what to do or micromanage me in any way. It's pretty awesome.

kWh = the energy expended by having a 1000 watt appliance on for an hour.

a simple lightbulb (like non halogen / LED or whatever) might use 50 watts? if you leave that on for an hour you will have used 50/1000*1=5/100=0.05 kWh

that means a lightbulb uses 0.05*24 = 1.2 kWh per 24 hours. that's quite a bit.

Interesting. Thanks.

Or a 100W desktop computer left on 24 hours/day is about 70kwh every month.

I'm always surprised how much my Christmas lights use every year. My electric bill spikes $100 every December.

We're talking Tree, some icicle lights on the gutters, 6 electric candle sets in the windows and some net lights on 3 bushes and rope lights down the driveway.

$100??? Geez.

I can't get it to add up so someone is obviously breaking into my house every day and using stuff.

Where is it that cold, gus?
02-02-2012 , 08:07 PM
Last summer I was getting these humongous electric bills and I figured it was because my AC was running nonstop. It turns out it was because I was having to water my plants every day just to keep them from dying. My rough calculation is that I could have replaced all the plants I have every year for the next 5 years for what it cost me to keep them alive this year.

No way... Sprinkler valves?

BTW, my highest utility by a decent margin is my water bill. $100 in the winter to $400 in August

looks slightly warmer than my forecast

Worst part is that when one lives in warm weather climate for a long time (and I've lived either in AZ or CA for the last 16 years), you don't have cold weather clothes (I wear shorts pretty much every day).

I'm lucky that I went skiing once a few years back, or I would have absolutely nothing. But as it is, all I have are ski gloves and a ski jacket. Doesn't go too well with the suit I'll have to be wearing.

Water is a steady $70-80/month. Electricity goes from less than $100/month in the winter to $330 ish/month in the summer, as the AC is on all the time. And I live in a small house. Friend of mine owns a large house with a pool. They have $900/month electricity bills in the summer.

I sold plasma twice, both times in 1986. I got about 20 bucks each time. It wasn't an unpleasant experience, clean place. But I felt a little tired after the 2nd time and never did it again.
