In other news, we're being balloted on strike action again, I had a very senior colleague (and an elite level academic) in tears in my office on tuesday as a result of the BS jobs they're being made to do, I've got a meeting with HR next week to protest the way management has been treating me, and a father of 3 threw himself out of a window two buildings & 1 department down the road because of the level of overwork he was being subjected to. The UK university sector is a car crash at the moment.

Sucky and frustrating.

In USA#1 we make our grad students do all the crap. So that leaves the professors free to consult on the side. Then they get a boatload of stock options and leave academia for the cush life.

Unlike YouTube, where the real hard yards are being ground out.

Taking on grad students is a real moral conundrum, imo. It’s a good way to get promoted and like you say it can relieve your teaching a bit, but it’s a terrible industry to try to get a job in so you have to caution them about it.

Anthony Bourdain died and that makes me sad.

Found out shortly after returning back to our place in Greece on a day where we hit up a local farmers market type thing and then got a bunch of great meat on a stick and drank a decent amount of local beer. Feels like it was very much his type of day

“What is dead may never die,” as they say in the Iron Islands and the halls of HBO. The network has picked up the pilot for an untitled prequel to “Game of Thrones,” created and written by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.

This won’t be “Better Call Stannis,” though. The official description, as announced by HBO, is as follows:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

The official credits for the pilot are: Story by Jane Goldman & George R.R. Martin, Teleplay by Jane Goldman.
jane goldman wrote kickass(good) and a bunch of garbabge

For as much of a money grab the game is, the story is somewhat engaging.

Harry Potter: The Hogwarts Mysteries

Think of the Kardashian Android game but with a Harry Potter theme.

The game feeds you a story that is gated with a finite amount of energy. You gain more energy by either spending real money or waiting for your energy to slowly replenish over time.

There are no real "game" aspects. It's an interactive fiction game with little to no story branching.

Given all the above, it's still a fairly addictive game. Don't play it.

One more thing... The graphics, sound and music are pretty darn good for a phone app. The whole thing is rendered with the 3d Unity engine. However, the game sadly doesn't really utilize what the engine is capable of.

I spend a lot of time thinking about very weird things with no practical value.

Recently I was thinking about how strongly we group music together by decades, and it caused me to wonder of songs released in the middle of a decade have an improved chance at withstanding the tests of time simply because they are going to be squarely in the middle of that decade's musical range. For example, if you're a hair metal band then your releases from 1990 or 1991 aren't likely to be included in any 90s mixes because they sound like they belong in the 80s, but they aren't likely to be included in any 80s mixes because they literally aren't from the 80s. And the wonderful Nirvana song "About a Girl" might also not appear in either group because who would put a Nirvana song alongside 80s music?

Am I wrong?

We had little step count challenge at work. I think i averaged around 18k-19k steps per day in last 4 weeks working full time. Even did my first marathon today (walking not running). Finished under 8 hours. I am pretty happy with my results. Some people took it pretty seriosly and best result ends over 30k steps per day. Two people even did double marathon yesterday.
