Moved in to a new place a bit over a month ago, the previous tenant left behind their bed and my roommates vaguely suggested that she would like to sell it to me. Just got a message saying she wants to come pick up the bed next week, giving a 2 day window. I'm really busy now and don't fancy needing to rush to find a replacement bed, I had moved in a couple weeks early so I could get everything in order before starting a new job.
Given that its been over a month and this is her first contact with me, I feel like I should be entitled to set the date to pick up the bed. Not that I would intentionally drag it out, but I shouldn't either be left without a bed or need to buy something without proper research just because my room has been used as a glorified storage unit. Sometime in the next few weeks I should get a replacement and she should be responsible for removing her bed from the apartment at that time. Do I have the right perspective here? What's my play?
I googled this a bit out of curiosity and concluded:
1) The laws for this are different in every state.
2) Regardless, the legal responsibility (where any exists) lies with the landlord, not the next tenant, so she's not in any position to make demands of you.
3) In some states, she may no longer have any right to the property at all.
