Rather than derailing the POGcathlon Walrus Reveal thread, i am putting this here. Please skip this if you just don't care

My thoughts on the 80s vs 90s vs 00s.

[RANT]

While there has been some good music since the 80s, there hasn't been as much of it. There is a blandness to it, and the groups tend to be interchangeable, for want of a better term.

I haven't seen a board game released post 80s that made me want to play. I'm sure I would enjoy some of them if I had friends with the games.

The best things that came out in the 90s are the CCGs. MtG, Jyhad, INWO, Netrunner, even Star Wars and Star Trek and a bunch of others. This was f'n brilliant. Thank you, Richard Garfield.

Tv went downhill after the 90s. In terms of scripted shows, there isn't much after X-Files. Big Bang Theory was good for a while, but hasn't been watchable for years. Hell, Ancient Aliens is better than 99.99% of what is currently available. And the "reality shows" have been a blight on humanity.

Saying scripted TV has gone downhill since the 90s is honestly one of the hottest takes I've ever seen, and just objectively wrong.

Who was it that said there has been no good music since Mozart? Systolic?

And somehow not even the worst take one that post. That board game sentence...my god.

Can't really comment on that since I don't really play many board games.

But aside from The Simpsons, Seinfeld and The Sopranos (which started in 99, so it barely counts), almost all of the best shows are from the 00s+. Saying otherwise is pure nostalgia.

Also, using BBT as the benchmark for good TV is pretty hilarious.

I can assure you that if chuckles or nich or gabe see that, then their eyes might bleed.

Not that BBT is a benchmark, just a lonely example of a show that used to be watchable.

Remember, I'm not saying there were no good board games produced. I'm just saying that I haven't seen one that makes me want to invest money or time in it.

What are your favorite games?

Fair question. Here is my rundown. I will admit that most of these do not run where I can watch them without extra cost or effort.

Band of Brothers. Can't watch, but might have been interested 30 years ago.
Breaking Bad. Can't watch. I am familiar with the concept and have seen a bit, but there is no appeal.
The Shield. Can't watch. I see promos on other channels. There are too many attempts to tweak the cop show concept. No appeal.
Justified. Can't watch. I know nothing about it.
Narcos Can't watch. Know very little about it.
Game of Thrones. Can't watch. It is something that should appeal to me, but what I have seen and what I have heard of it, it comes across as full of itself and not interesting.
Better Call Saul. Can't watch. What I have seen does have some appeal.
Peaky Blinders. Can't watch, and never heard of it.
Boardwalk Empire. Can't watch. What I have seen comes across as simply an attempt to be super gritty and just isn't interesting.
Fargo. Can't watch. I've heard that it's supposed to be quirky. In my experience, quirky means bad. I don't want to watch a show abour small town antics.
Shameless. Can't watch. I have heard of it, but know nothing else.
Banshee. Can't watch. It seems like an attempt to make a more complicated small town show.
Spartacus. Can't watch. Sounds neat, but gladiator stuff gets old really quick.
Vikings. This one I can watch, and I feel I should like it, but I just can't.
The Last Kingdom. Can't watch. Never heard of it. Historical drama is good for a movie, but not a TV series.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Can't watch. It seems to be trying to be an edgier version of Cheers, which was a passable show at best.
Arrested Development I tried to watch it, back in the day, but it's just bad. Stupid people in stupid situations. Again, it seems to be trying to be quirky.
The IT Crowd. Can't watch. Hadn't heard of it, and what I read in wikipedia doesn't make me want to watch.
Silicon Valley. Can't watch. Sounds like something I might watch, but being a Mike Judge show - the odds aren't good.
Curb Your Enthusiasm. I have seen this, and it is simply unwatchable. Larry David should not be on TV.

So I will restate, with clarification, that there is almost nothing on my television that I want to watch. There is very little that I wish I could watch. Most of the time, when the TV is on, I will put in my earbuds and listen to a podcast or an audiobook.

Holy crap the"being a Mike judge show, the odds aren't good." Is an even worse take than anything else

Monopoly, when played properly.
Talisman
Empire Builder, British Rails
Rise and Fall (a bit - I haven't played it a lot)
Britannia
Civilization/Adv. Civ.

And then there are the games like chess, backgammon, go (haven't played in a long time).

B&B is just awful. King of the Hill is less enjoyable than vomiting. There are no likable characters, and it is all stupid people doing stupid things.

I haven't seen his other TV shows, and I haven't watched the movies.

This is pretty much what I assumed. Your opinions are pretty useless when you are bashing shows that you've never even seen. That's filthy's job. Also, when people say that TV is much better these days, they're not talking about network television.

FWIW, I think of all the shows I listed, The IT Crowd is probably the one most likely to be right up your alley. Sort of like a funny version of BBT from the guy who made Father Ted (which I think you liked iirc?).
12-10-2018 , 12:19 AM
Gotta admit, I'm not a big Mike Judge fan either. Silicon Valley is great, though.
12-10-2018 , 02:04 AM
diab, if you haven't seen "the patriot" it's one of the best shows. def deserves to be on your list. it's not for everyone, but i'm pretty sure you'd like it. it's at least worth a try.

I've seen the first season. I like it ok, but it's the type of show where I completely forget about it once the season is over.

I know there's a 2nd season out now, which I'll def check out at some point when I run out of other stuff to watch.
12-10-2018 , 04:43 AM
interesting. im surprised that was your reaction.

did i already ask you about "the detectorists"? what do you think of that one? that's another one of my favorite newer shows. though it just finished

that's another one that i def don't recommend to everyone. i'm not sure there is anyone in the pub i'd for sure recommend it to. probably kokiri, if i had to bet on someone to like it. though i think iversonian liked it?

and sometimes pwns shows a surprising bit of sensitivity. he'd be my dark horse pick to like it.
12-10-2018 , 05:19 AM
I love Detectorists. When you say it's finished, do you mean finished for good, or just the season? The one thing I hate about British shows is that the seasons are so short.

Re Patriot, I dunno, it just didn't really click with me for some reason, at least at the time I watched it. Could be a mood thing...maybe I watch it now and have a different reaction. When I watch s2, I'll let you know what I think.

Things havent got worse, everyone is just nostalgic about stuff from their youth. Plus its easier to filter out all the crap that was popular back in the day and just cherry pick the best stuff.
