in the mountaineering vids, these people are just constantly leaving each other to die on the mountains! and it's like the rule. if someone is ****ed up, you gotta just leave them and save yourself... cuz even if you don't use energy and time trying to save them, you still might die.

like dying, and leaving people to die, are just part of the hobby!

so it seems like it's pretty standard for you to continue to want to climb, even after an accident.

also, sounds like your friend got incredibly lucky to live. but im really sorry for you and your friend. damn bro....

but also, im glad you're doing that. it sounds incredible. im happy for you, and all the other people who get to do that. i'll live vicariously through you

bicycling used to be main source of transportation, from ages like 8 to 45... but i stopped after i moved to LA bleh

i was riding more than 100 miles a week for a while, and this was up and down san francisco hills
It was pretty traumatic for him. I tend to do well in situations like that, and the rescue training kicked in like it should. Honestly things just kept moving so quickly that I really didn't have time to stop and feel anything until afterwards, and it was quite emotional. I didn't save his life, he would have been fine, ultimately, but he still needed to get down from a tough technical approach. Took about 10 people and about 5 improvised rappels and a lot of roped simul climbing to get down.

Yeah, that's a consideration that I thankfully don't really ever have to deal with, but is still a real concern and something we think about. In the rock climbing community in particular, serious accidents and the occasional death are not uncommon. There's a really great publication that comes out every year called Accidents in North American Climbing if you are interested in reading about accidents in the mountains.

Yeah, it's fairly standard to hear from people involved in serious accidents that they want to get back to climbing ASAP. From my perspective, I did everything I needed to do while belaying and then helping him, and nothing more could have been done. If anything, I could have questioned his desire to lead the climb or suggested a different route, but I was not knowledgable about the issues with the route that ultimately led to the accident. He wasn't either, but that's not always needed. If a climber looks at a route and says they want to climb it, who am I to question his judgement? I already made that determination by going out there with him. Going forward I will definitely be more conservative with the type of climbing I do with certain people.

I'm really loving biking, for both fitness and leisure. Love bombing down hills outside Asheville, and have lost a lot of weight I gained last year with very little change to the rest of my life.

Sounds like me!

Do you ever microdose? Microdosing has almost completely removed my desire to impulsively drink, and I often don't even in social situations with others. Focus and energy go way up. Not as depressed as much. Just had a girl that I've been talking to for months pretty much abruptly end stuff out of nowhere, and normally I'd be an absolute drunken mess for a few weeks. But it's been two days, I haven't gotten drunk, and I'm already excited to get out and meet some new people.

People who do it as their primary form of climbing don't usually last too long. Almost all climbers do some manner of easy soloing. I'm not interested in the adrenaline or the thrill of it, sometimes it's just easier to get through certain easy sections of a big route without setting up anchors and a belay.

yes!! well sort of... this poker player was telling me how microdosing changed his life. and he was going to give me a bunch of pills, but he never did. so my gf got me some. and i just started taking one 100mg pill a day last monday through friday... didn't notice anything. i took the weekend off like the instructions said. then monday i took 2 pills, and i was tripping balls, but probably cuz the weed enhanced it lol... then yesterday one pill.
how long is it supposed to take to notice a difference in my brain?

and also that's great that your gf dumped you and you didn't even get drunk! good job man! i mean sucks she dumped you, but a life change like not having to drink when normally you would, is huge!!! woo hoo!

It's hard for me to say how long it took until I noticed an improvement in my brain when it pretty much led to smoking and drinking less almost immediately, and doing those things less made me start feeling generally better after about a week. I'd say it was a solid 3 weeks or so after that where I noticed I was focusing at work better, practicing music with more intention again and wanting to get outside in situations throughout the day where I'd usually play a video game as a little break.

Yeah, man. She doesn't know what she wants, and that's ok, even though she didn't have much tact in expressing it. But that is ultimately her problem, and even if it were my problem, there's no reason to drink over it.

Some guy died playing pickleball around here a couple months ago. Fell backwards and hit his head. Falls and hitting your head from not that high can be quite dangerous.

Not a comment on anything specific tbob said just a tangent.

In responder training we are told to treat any fall from 6 feet as a potential head and neck injury. So a 6'-ish tall man falling backwards and dying certainly isn't without precedence. Life is precious, might as well do crazy ****.

my tolerance is building up, so it cost me like 20 cents
You bring me back to my single/college days! I was only a social pot/alcohol user.

I remember by officemate for my first job was really into LSD. I was intrigued but his complaints about the side effects (It messed up his sleeping) scared me.

My wife is curious about edibles... I'm more interested in mushrooms. We'll see.

Mark, my favorite way to consume shrooms for an actual trip is with edibles...look into thos. Eating actual shrooms is disgusting, imo. Or, get powder and make capsules. You can measure out your exact dose that way, and not have to taste it.

LSD definitely messes up your sleep, but not really in a bad way unless you really need to sleep. You'll get to a point where you are tired, and want to sleep...you'll even close your eyes...but then you get really cool visuals as the trip wears off. You'll eventually sleep good as hell, and the day after you'll likely feel vibrant and stimulated. I always loved the days after a trip if I didn't have any responsibilities for the day

if your wife has no tolerance for weed, i recommend starting off with 5mg. 10mg is normal edible dose. and wait 2 hours after eating! usually the high hits me in about an hour, but sometimes 2 hours... and it's waaaaaay better to take too little than too much. with edibles it's really easy to take too much and have a horrible experience.

i used to get really high from 5mg when i first started
