it came out today that elon was lying about the hyperloop, just because he wanted high speed rail in ca to fail

And CA high speed rail should fail/get cancelled. A rail line from nowhere to nowhere. What a boondoggle.

zillions of people travel between sf and la every day. a high speed rail would be great. san diego, vegas... some people even go to sacramento and wine country, and yosemite and tahoe

i thought the hyperloop was supposed to connect la and sf for it's first thing. i mean that's the whole reason elon said it was gonna be a thing, was to try to discourage the govt from building it

Um, the high speed rail does not go from LA to SF. It goes from nowhere CA to Empty CA.

It's too expensive for the rail to go through the LA mountains and the land is too expensive around the SF peninsula to buy. So it ends way before both of them.

The hyperloop is just a technology. It can be used anywhere. e.g. like LV.

supposedly ****head musk announced hyperloop partly to keep it from existing.

other countries build high speed rail over/through mountains, and on expensive real estate. it's def doable.

It may be doable, but it isn't the heart in any current existing plan. What's being built is worthless. Especially for the price.

btw, any high speed rail has to compete with $59 1 hour LA to SF Southwest flights. I'd love to see how those economics pencil out.

There is a good reason why most projects like this end up over budget. It's not a good reason in particular to fully abandon it.

$10 got them 'dog', which already existed. They didn't want to start over since they were already $10 in the hole, so they paid two teams $5 each to quickly come up with something new. One team got 'boondog' and the other 'doggle'. $5 more went into the committee to decide between the two, and they ultimately combined both because they couldn't decide, and that's ultimately what most committees end up doing anyway. The last $3 was spent trying to convince the public that this is what they wanted all along.
