Asking people what standard would prove/disprove something could be useful. At least to better understand their thoughts even if it wouldn't end up convincing anyone.

What standards would luckbox ban someone for or whatever.

the % who think the holocaust is a myth is about the same % as the people who think the sun goes around the earth

I'm not sure that is the fault of education as opposed to 1/4 of americans just being too stupid to live

while I love dunking on americans, I think that tweet does play a little fast and loose with the numbers about how many people think it's a myth (although the actual numbers are still bad)

looking at the study (p4), it looks like 10% think it's a myth or aren't sure (no breakdown provided of the not sures, but given 12% of respondents apparently had never heard of the holocaust you've got to think there's at least a few), and the 23% figure also includes people who think it was exaggerated or weren't sure whether it was exaggerated (to be clear: also not great)

idk maybe that's not important but it just bugs me when someone makes a claim and links to an article that doesn't actually say what they claim it does, even when the spirit of what they're saying isn't really affected too much

as for two thirds of people not being able to name the number of jews killed in the holocaust when asked 'how many jews dies in the holocaust?'...well, I like to think I'm not a complete idiot but if you asked me that question then my answer would 100% be a guess because that's not a figure I've ever memorised. I might get there if you offered me some options but just asking me to pull it out of the air? nah I'm gonna miss badly

honestly slightly surprised that a third of people could get that one right, am I just being ignorant here?

gotta admit some minor confusion about those guys who've never heard of the holocaust before but are still sure that it happened

I would have gotten that number wrong for sure.

I've never memorized it either, but I'd say 6 million Jews killed is pretty much basic knowledge in the U.S and certainly part of our school curriculum. I certainly knew it instantly.

maybe that's just a quirk of different emphasises between curriculums (or should it be curricula?)

I certainly remember learning about the holocaust in school, but I don't remember there ever being a focus on that particular number

What? The 6 million figure is widely known/used all the time. I'm pretty sure I knew that in primary school.

6 million seems like common knowledge but also non important and forgettable if you don't keep hearing it, like the lusitania

"60 Percent of People Can't Change a Flat Tire - But Most Can Google It"

There you go.

Alternatively people's knowledge of other genocides is way lower, and 6 million not jews were killed too.

That’s not the case and it’s ridiculous that you are acting like it is. This started from a discussion of trans rights and treatment, that is a group of people who deserves this kind of outrage and action when treated unjustly. Kelhus can’t post on a forum in a world with millions of forums he can join? Boo hoo. Nothing is at stake for him or you here, your lives are largely unaffected. You’re blowing this way out of proportion and it’s going too far.

I am bothered that a ww player got banned. I like playing ww and recognize games don’t happen without players. That’s a fair thing to be bothered by. But your emotions and sense of injustice over “censorship” are unfounded and do not warrant this behavior.
This spun out of a discussion on J.K. Rowling and her comments/attitudes and only later became about sexuality in general. Any question of trans rights was only tangential to that.
But you don't get to just be like "ahh someone was banned so sad. But they weren't marginalized enough to care about".
I actually liked Kelhus and like I said interacted with him fairly extensively over the last year or so in the politics forum. So when people who should never have been mod ban him unjustly I'm obviously going to be upset, especially when it takes place in my thread and involves Kelhus discussing elephants.
Ultimately no I'm not going too far. Eyebooger went too far. What happened yesterday shouldn't have happened. There were about 12 other steps that could have happened before eyebooger decided to ban someone "because he got complaints". Never once did eyebooger even say what any of the posts that concerned him were. He basically admits there was no reason other than that Kelhus is a previously banned poster.

And for what it's worth, I have no vested interest in whether this thread exists or not nor any kind of power-hungry desire to be an authoritarian dictator.

The Kelhus banning today was my first concrete action in my roughly year and a half as moderator.
Pretty much all of your other minor actions have also been incorrect fwiw. Like when you admonished me when Master got out of line or tried to censor pwns and me in the wayfaire discussion.
Why not just let ianaww deal with the thread since you don't care about it?
