She definitely meets the good and virtuous person criterion. Plus the thought of Bird as First Spouse going around telling Washingtonians exactly what he thinks of all of them tickles my funny bone.
Please dont do this. In the event that shenanigans happen, a mandate of voters might go a long way.

the same deluded fools who are legitimately concerned that Trump might not leave office if he loses are like “omg make sure you vote”

imagine if during slavery, every 4 years the slaves on any plantation could elect whether their owner for the next 4 years was their master or his son or wife or whatever

The thing with democracy is that it only works as much as people actually do it.

I agree that Americans generally don't bother, but the calls itt to forget about it are a cause, not a symptom. Make no mistake.

Big time commitment for little effect. They're almost certainly acting rationally.

The effect is cumulative.

Actually, the effort required and the effects thereof are, I think, respectively inversely and directly proportionate to the extent of engagement.

lol

it sounds like you are saying that what makes or doesn't make America democratic is how much the electorate works at it which is of course wrong and ahistorical

It's wrong in the worst sorts of ways. It's Ad Council stuff.
It's "Only you can prevent fascism" sorts of sloganeering.

personal choices and responsibilities

The move towards setting every person as a worthy locus of ethical and valuative determination is one we may take for granted, but imagine a world where we don't have that.

Then acknowledge that we live in that world, and recognize that we don't really live in a liberal one, even if the elites purport to espouse liberal values.

neoliberalism is the dominant ideology

it's so dominant that its assumptions are taken for granted

how can you say we don't live in a liberal world?

I'm no expert on "neoliberalism", but afaict it represents lip service by economic elites to liberal ideals while working against them for the material benefit of said elites.

Back around the time I went into quarantine, I started a thread in Politics about the necessity of redistribution for the maintenance of liberalism.

I gave up after a week or two of being conservatrolled, but I haven't moved from the position.

Simply put as a response to you, Sun:

If liberalism is premised on each individual as a locus of value, and if the status quo does not so reflect the significance of each individual, then we do not live in a liberal paradigm.

maybe "liberalism" is just a bad term to use since it's vague, means different things to different people, and seems to have a lot more connotation and baggage than usefulness

wikipedia says it's based on liberty, equality before the law and consent of the governed, which I will agree does not describe the world we live in
