But on the whole topic of noun classes and sexism, there probably isn't a better reference than George Lakoff's Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things-- which is an actual noun class in an Australian language.

I don’t think fixing a bunch of random words or phrases like “mankind” piecemeal is the goal nor the solution.

I think questioning and addressing a society that uses “man” as a substitute for person in the first place such that we wound up with a bunch of stuff line “x-men” and “mankind” is what people are trying to do

I can never really tell and it depends who is talking, but it sorta sounds like 'man' and 'dude' being used as gender neutral is a symptom of the patriarchy and evidence of the patriarchy and helps perpetuate the patriarchy.

I'm skeptical of all of those but the last one the most.

And of course the patriarchy isn't exactly well defined in all situations.

'Person' comes from French via the latin 'persona'-- which meant a character in a play-- whereas 'son' is Germanic in origin. There still might be some shared PIE (proto-Indo-European) origin for both terms and probably is.*

Like as in from the “womb” of “man” since Eve came from Adam’s rib or something?

What I'm gathering is that 'man' used to refer to both sexes, and 'woman' is some sort of middle English portmanteau of 'wife of man'.

The 'womb of man' idea is folk etymology and apparently false.

when star trek tng changed "to boldly go where no man has gone before" to "no one has gone before" i got all butt hurt cuz i was young, ignorant, and fragile.

my mom told me it wasn't a gender thing. she said they changed it to include aliens

Speaking of jurassic Park holds up well and court room dramas i almost always like.

Maybe the perfect movie is jurassic Park on a sub where the t rex is on trial but it turns out he couldn't pull the nuclear shut off switch because she's left handed.
