I'm sticking with the most environmentally friendly approach. Taxing the rich just kills more trees and hatches new broods of CPAs.

Republican talking points!

Yeah I thought it was one of her first "obvious" missteps but people seem to be loving it.

In important news norm died. Dunno how everyone feels about him I thought he was great. Him calling out Cosby on the view was great. Apparently everyone knew!?!? And oj simpson and some others.

Comically a post/picture praising her is the top post on the sanders for president subreddit (though half of people are mocking it).

Bernie must be rolling in his grave.

If you were driving behind some van and thought you saw a kidnapped child in the back through the window but weren't sure what would you do?

what could you see to make you think the child was kidnapped?

like a child tied up? held at gunpoint?

Any of those. Holding up an I'm kidnapped sign. Maybe a bomb strapped to his or her body.

Re: POG Politics Thread Version 3

tied up child. child held at gunpoint. child holding up a kidnapped sign. i think those would call get me to call the cops. and if you asked me to call the cops or chop off one of my hands, i'd have to think about it.

bomb strapped to a child's body. i wouldn't call. i mean i wouldn't feel confident enough to judge whether it was a bomb or something else

but actually i don't own a phone. so i'd have to ask someone else to call the cops

https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-s...ract-proposals

Article isn't mind blowing or anything but I like the accusation this is being done as a maneuver and glossing over the entire premise of publicly arguing pay discrimination not being a maneuver (they both seem like obvious maneuvers)

Also the argument that this is being used to pay the men less to make things equal. Who could have ever foreseen such a thing!?!?

World’s Wealthiest Families Gained $312 Billion Over Past Year

During the early stages of the pandemic there was discussion between me and Birdman about who benefits from lockdowns, with Birdman arguing that "the rich" would prefer the status quo ante, and me arguing that they have been the ones pushing lockdowns. And these numbers certainly don't settle that question but they are a data point and there isn't any reason to say that covid has been unkind to them.

Well-- the numbers are in. They've been in for a little bit actually. Inequality is at an all time high, the poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer. A google search of 'covid wealth inequality' will bring up dozens of articles supporting that. Here are a few though:
Inequality has been building for decades in the U.S., but experts say the pandemic 'ripped it open'
Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk among US billionaires getting richer during coronavirus pandemic
How billionaires saw their net worth increase by half a trillion dollars during the pandemic
And obviously it's important to distinguish between people like Jeff Bezos and people who run nail salons. Not all business owners are the same and they only become a monolith at the top. No doubt the overwhelming majority of business owners do want to see lockdowns ended-- but are those the ones with the power?
I forget that the numbers have been in for a bit. Post from January...

The only part of this that I question is whether the poor actually are getting poorer. Between supplemental unemployment, not paying rent during the eviction freeze and gross wages for low skill jobs spiking hard, are they?

That doesn't mean that the rich aren't getting richer, which they are, or that inequality isn't rising, which it may well be given how much the capital-owning classes have seen their net worth rise over the past two years.

I'd look for data but since most of what's out there will be opinion or cherry picked not going to bother.

Whether it's status quo ante or whatever this new reality is the rich will find a way to exploit it to their advantage.
