I haven't actually seen bahbah post in politics in a long time either although economic stuff like this is definitely his forte.
Hard to disagree with Crossnerd on this issue though.

They did get the "fanatic secular" right, though

I mean more that given the limited amount that I know about bahbah, him randomly jumping in here on this exact specific issue re the role of technology/automation in the economy is not completely unexpected.

what he said is total gibberish though

and his previous comments on economics have been laughable and haven’t remotely demonstrated a grasp of even basic concepts

just weird to call it his forte when he has demonstrated the opposite to be true

PS: I missed you guys too. Today was the first time I opened a political thread in quite a while on 2+2, but I decided to randomly take a look and when I saw the "the machines are coming" fear-mongering I had to jump in - I have been laughing about this argument for all 10 years I've been on 2+2.

This is coming from my shaky memory: I think I got banned (from one of the sub forums) for 3 months for sharing facts about the breonna taylor case even though I supported the claims with well known left leaning media sources (there were literally people claiming that the police didn't knock even though months before the police, a lot of neighbors and even breonna bf said the police knocked). So that explains some of my time off (that was maybe 6 months ago maybe), but I think I stopped or drastically cut back on politics on 2+2 before that.

always intellectually honest when people just call things they don't agree with "conspiracy theory" even though it makes absolutely no sense in the given context

I can’t tell if you think John Brown killed millions of people or if you are just bad at math, because the number of people you’d need to guillotine to kill the 1% puts you closer to Hitler or Genghis territory.

For someone who’s a stickler with analogies, this was a pretty bad one by you.

It’s more that you’re misrepresenting her point and contributing nothing to what was an interesting discussion by reducing it to something you’ve labeled as fear-mongering so you could make a poorly formed argument against a straw man. Imo.

it wasn't an analogy

i assumed you didn't mean the "guillotine the 1%" thing literally, so my mistake if you did

but 16 people died during John Brown's raid, and he violently took hostages. He was convicted of murder and executed.

I am just curious if you think what he did was murder or not.

I don’t even need to look to know exactly what happened.

Spoiler:
You definitely said something racist.

Claims that the machines are going to take the jobs are silly at best. My first response to claims that the machines are coming wasn't always saying that is a conspiracy theory.

I used to try to help people understand why they are wrong, but it comes back up way too much on 2+2. It is almost starts sounding like the pro-socialism argument in that it is always ends up with them saying, "Ok we have been wrong so many times throughout history that I can't count, but THIS TIME it is different." There are just some people who are convinced that socialism is a good thing and machines will take the jobs and there is just no sense in arguing with them because there is always an excuse why their argument was wrong 200, 150, 100 and 50 years ago despite people being convinced THIS IS THE TIME it will work in each of those years.

If you really want to give this a shot explain why this is going to be different than the previous few hundred years when people were scared that new technology was coming for the jobs.

Taking life is by definition murder. What you want to ask is if I think it was justifiable homicide, and whether or not I personally would have convicted him of a crime.

How am I supposed to answer this exactly? Through the lens of the beliefs I hold today in the modern era or through the lens of how I imagine I might have been back in that era? I think if you are looking for a specific answer to a specific question it would be better to mark up your own scenario for me to give an answer to rather than try to contextualize a historical event as a person living outside those times. Also, I’d have to actually read the circumstances surrounding those killings before I could answer with any amount of ethical confidence.

Relatedly, I don’t believe in the death penalty, and you know this.
