2020 electoral map if only ____ voted. Breakdown by each major demographics. I thought some were pretty interesting. e.g. single vs married

It was pretty weird when my age bracket went from making fun of zealotous overbearing reactionaries to becoming them. At least violent video games and booze are safe.

I wonder how much of getting crochety is a function of getting older.

Quasi related I bet having / raising kids is a big pull towards neolib and/or neocon.

interesting... yeah, i think you are probably right about having kids

i also suspect that most people have kids for very selfish reasons. i mean humans are selfish creatures. it's our nature to try to make our own lives better, i think even when we are being altruistic, there is still sometimes a selfish motive.

but creating another human life is such an incredibly huge step, and sacred responsibility. i suspect that even parents who take it very seriously still often have a bad ratio of concern for the child's well being/concern for their own well being

and to be clear, im def not talking about parents in this thread. i'm talking about humans in general

bridman or anyone else...

do you have any thoughts on the debate between sartre and camus about capitalism vs stalinism? or was it even about that? i got the sense the host was a brainwashed american capitalist, and so framed the debate from that view.

just from listening to the podcast it seemed like sartre was hating on the spread of capitalism after ww2, and camus was hating on the spread of the soviet union

i listened to 25 minute philosophize this podcast that talked a little about it

I haven’t listened to the link (I will later), but “Stalinism” isn’t a thing. Stalin was a Marxist-Leninist. The USSR was Marxist-Leninist state under Stalin. Anyone saying “Stalinism” just doesn’t know what they are talking about.

i'm not sure if the guy actually used the word stalinism. he was criticizing communism, but mostly criticizing stalin.

you have to remember that sometimes i'm nearly as bad as mets with my interpretation/reporting

Pay go is a rule adopted by the house each session (probably dating back to Clinton) which says any ordinary legislation must be deficit neutral or limited duration. I don’t know the details.

It’s a bad rule. How to fund the government and what to spend on are different problems and don’t belong in the same bill always.

before the hungarian revolution of 1956, Sartre was probably ecstatic at the prospect of a genuine challenge to capitalist orthodoxy

camus probably saw the monolithic tendencies of leninism and the futility of its teleological ideals

best guess w/o watching the vid (though I did look up the hungarian revolution bit)

jfc losing wikileaks is such a huge loss. the **** that became public knowledge from wikileaks was huge!!! sadly, our reaction to it was nothing really. i suspect it's probably because no one was really surprised by the awful truth that came out.

Even if the political change is negligible (it isn't), Georgia going socially blue is huge imo.
