Here in New York City, never-before-seen images show people incarcerated in the notorious Rikers Island jail locked in caged showers and sleeping next to a pile of feces. The pictures were obtained by the news outlet Gothamist after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office requested them while investigating the consequences for people held at Rikers as they await trial, sometimes for months or years.

This comes as the Texas Jail Project has documented severe overcrowding at the Harris County Jail in Houston, which has surpassed Rikers with 19 custody deaths in the first eight months of 2022 — more than the total number of people who died in the jail in nine of the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, a federal court judge has ordered Los Angeles County to fix its massive backup and address squalid conditions in the jail’s overcrowded Inmate Reception Center after revelations of horrific treatment, and ruled that officers are now barred from chaining anyone to a chair for more than four hours, after some had been found to be chained for days.

More private, for profit prisons should solve that.

Yes, because there is nothing at all broken about using correctional facilities that have a financial incentive to incarcerate more people for longer terms...and to short them on amenities and services to save money.

Mark, I mean, your recent posts HAVE to be trolling. Nobody intelligent can look at the U.S. prison system and think that almost everyone who is serving time deserves to be.

In the spirit of unquantifiable trolling, I'm not sure how much of this is a troll: buy Iwo Jima from Japan, or Diego Garcia from Britain/India, and turn it into a prison island for violent offenders and repeat felons. Just drop them off (maybe with a small amount of supplies) and forget about them. Not a generally acceptable practice these days, but one can see the appeal.

Way to bring up a sore subject. Tesla for some unknown reason removed the Vin of my future car (added 7 days ago) from my order and it looks like I'm back to the waiting game.

I've never watched Tucker Carlson and see no reason to start, but twitter informs me that he's going to have Ye on tonight. Mark, going to need a full report later of what is sure to be a complete and glorious cluster of a ****.

I don't really enjoy watching Carlson or Hannity. I would rather turn the TV off.

I routinely watch primetime CNN instead. Except for Gutfeld which is great.

I can't explain it.

Watching CNN would be more painful even than watching Tucker Carlson I think. I’m not sure who has the worst people, Fox, cnn or msnbc.

I assume you also can't stand Bill Maher? I also enjoy watching him.

Funny is subjectively funny.

I'm not wild about Bill Maher but I do think he gets off some good lines. I respect Maher as a competent professional comedian. Gutfeld I just find totally worthless, even while probably agreeing with him on most political issues.

Now Dennis Miller in his prime I genuinely loved, even if he wasn't quite on the level of geniuses like Norm MacDonald, Sam Kinison and Mitch Hedberg.

I love Dennis Miller as a comic, not so much as a radio personality. Mainly because he's a little boring. I thought he was awesome on Monday night football.

About 95% of my good feelings for him were from him on SNL in the 80s and early 90s. Probably more evidence of my terminal case of old-man-living-in-the-past. I didn't even know he was on the radio now! And only sorta half-remembered that he once hosted MNF, wasn't that considered a debacle and quickly abandoned?

That point about Gutfeld and Maher is really the crux. Maher is a professional comedian who has developed his personality and career to do what he does well, whether people like it or not. It's authentic in its aim.

Gutfeld is essentially the right's response to the left dominating political humor. There is no authenticity, the "humor" is an afterthought (and the punchline is often hate), and its all designed to parrot a narrative within the guise of a comedy show. Borderline dystopian, imo
