But on the whole topic of noun classes and sexism, there probably isn't a better reference than George Lakoff's Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things-- which is an actual noun class in an Australian language.
I don’t think fixing a bunch of random words or phrases like “mankind” piecemeal is the goal nor the solution.
I think questioning and addressing a society that uses “man” as a substitute for person in the first place such that we wound up with a bunch of stuff line “x-men” and “mankind” is what people are trying to do
I can never really tell and it depends who is talking, but it sorta sounds like 'man' and 'dude' being used as gender neutral is a symptom of the patriarchy and evidence of the patriarchy and helps perpetuate the patriarchy.
I'm skeptical of all of those but the last one the most.
And of course the patriarchy isn't exactly well defined in all situations.

Also 'you guys' as 2nd person plural, because we lack a second person plural.
That should be fixed and we should also get a 1st person plural inclusive/exclusive distinction-- because utterances like "we're going to the store" can be ambiguous as to whether or not the addressee is included-- some languages have that.

I don’t know the etymology, is perSON gendered or is it coincidence?
Being probably the best gender neutral substitute for “man” etc
'Person' comes from French via the latin 'persona'-- which meant a character in a play-- whereas 'son' is Germanic in origin. There still might be some shared PIE (proto-Indo-European) origin for both terms and probably is.*
Borrowed from Latin persōna (“mask; character”), of uncertain origin. Possibly from personō (“to sound through”); or from Ancient Greek πρόσωπον (prósōpon, “face; appearance; mask used in ancient theatre to denote a character or, more generally, a social role”); or from Etruscan (φersu). Doublet of person and parson.
when star trek tng changed "to boldly go where no man has gone before" to "no one has gone before" i got all butt hurt cuz i was young, ignorant, and fragile.
my mom told me it wasn't a gender thing. she said they changed it to include aliens
Speaking of jurassic Park holds up well and court room dramas i almost always like.
Maybe the perfect movie is jurassic Park on a sub where the t rex is on trial but it turns out he couldn't pull the nuclear shut off switch because she's left handed.
