Geez. Great point guys. I'm not sure why we don't just keep creating more and more money. Someone get GOATrump on the horn. I think we just solved the problem of global poverty. I just quit my job - the government is going to start giving everyone $10M a year. We are all rich now!

LB - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_American_currency

bahbah - it's called "monetary policy"

I am quite smitten with the MMT introduced to me by MonkeyBanana. The only piece of the easy-money puzzle I can't fit is international exchange.

Re: POG Politics Thread

My only point is that it's inaccurate to say that the US government has been creating money since 1775. The creation of the federal reserve system in 1913 (and we can thank Andrew Jackson that it wasn't earlier) gave the power of money creation to banks. Since that time the dollar has lost something like 97% of its value through inflation.

Now I'm sure if Monkey were here he would tell me how I'm wrong, but he isn't.

Bahbahs point is that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Even if the money is created from nothing, people still do pay for it in one way or another. But mostly it is a hidden tax on savings.

Re: POG Politics Thread

You're wrong. The gov't (specifically, the Treasury Dept) makes the money, deposits it into the Fed (a national bank), and the Fed distributes it.

So we make the money, give it to the banks, and they sell it back to us.

No?

Maybe money’s not the right word. (Banks &) the government clearly do create money. Perhaps value is better.

I don't think we just give it to the banks. afaiu, we (through the Fed) either loan it to them (the banks) or sell it to them in the form of bonds.

Echo'ing our earlier discussion about landlords, the banks serve several transactional functions (logistical and administrative) in addition to safeguarding physical wealth.

Yeah that's fine. Maybe they do a bit but not convinced it's as much as they get back by a close factor.

idk, it seems like they (generally) provide for economies of scale that enable economic paradigms we probably take for granted

Any opinion on this Franken crap? Can see lots of angles. If he chose to run again in 2020 or whatever and got reelected would that be fine?

Does "civil participation" count as "contribution"?

If not, does offsetting the alternative costs of policing and healthcare count?

I think Franken is genuinely contrite and repentant, and I believe firmly in, not just the power, but the necessity of forgiveness upon atonement.

What are your thoughts on the cake case? From what I read sounds like he generally sells cakes to gay people but didn't want to do a gay wedding cake. Is that right?

Should it depend on the design of the cake?

Should a Jewish baker be forced to bake a Nazi themed wedding cake?

Should a Mexican-american owned construction company be forced to work on Trump's border wall?

Once you open a business do you not have any rights to object to things that you find unconscionable?

Re: POG Politics Thread

I believe that "sexual orientation" should be added to the protected list of suspect classifications, on which basis discrimination should be barred.

This would require an amendment to the Civil Rights Act for the case of a private business.

I don't see SCOTUS ruling against the cake-maker, but ideally I want them to be compelled so to rule.
