You've said something like that a few times about NK so far. Care to explain this time?

The bottom line is that American foreign policy has created a situation where any country that desires independence from Western hegemony must strive to posses nuclear weapons. That is the only thing that can protect them from military intervention. The rest is just talk. And unfortunately, that is not something that can just be undone (not likely the US would want to undo it even if they could, anyways).

Ok, this is fine. Not sure how this is contradictory to the article really.

Sure:

Quote:
Since the publication of Edward Said's Orientalism in 1978, much academic discourse has begun to use the term "Orientalism" to refer to a general patronizing Western attitude towards Middle Eastern, Asian and North African societies. In Said's analysis, the West essentializes these societies as static and undeveloped—thereby fabricating a view of Oriental culture that can be studied, depicted, and reproduced. Implicit in this fabrication, writes Said, is the idea that Western society is developed, rational, flexible, and superior
Quote:
Orientalism, defined as the West's patronizing representations of "The East"—the societies and peoples who inhabit the places of Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. According to Said, orientalism (the Western scholarship about the Eastern World) is inextricably tied to the imperialist societies who produced it, which makes much Orientalist work inherently political and servile to power.

It's not entirely contradictory. Just saying the article misses the point (among all its racist conjecture). American foreign policy is directly responsible for the proliferation of nuclear weapons and moreover it is not up to the US to police who can and can't have nukes. In order to make that argument you have to stick to the racist depictions of Korean society.

The only thing the NYT should be saying about DPRK is to leave them the **** alone.

It definitely seems silly to equate the motives of a society (if those can even be said to exist) with those of the ruling regime anywhere.

But to call that racist is basically the equivalent of vmf calling a Freudian analysis of females sexist.

Okay, it's not a casual analysis of nuclear proliferation or a case for deproliferation though. It's an analysis of how to keep the nukes from being used one they proliferate. Which is something your analysis doesn't consider at all.

I still don't understand what you think is racist about the article, but whatever I guess.

Not sure that any orientalism in the article was particularly pernicious. I thought it did a reasonable job of portraying how the world looks from the NK POV.

I believe Putin pays three people, Rohrabacher, Trump, and dustbox.

But we'll just keep it between us. This is how we know we're a family.

anonymous hearsay

(neverminding that the present anonymous hearsay is hearsay within hearsay within ~hearsay)

I was gonna cyberbully Melania over the demented pink dress but maturely demurred, mindful that fashion is a minefield she usually navigates with aplomb.
