The charging practice of prosecutors is partly an underhanded negotiation tactic and partly a consequence of Double Jeopardy jurisprudence.

the smollet thing seems standard imo. false reporting is hard to prove and it sometimes involves throwing your police to the wolves in potential cross examinations.

he basically took an alford type plea before any of the court stuff, my jurisdiction doesn't practice "posting and forfeiting" but from what i've read it isn't that uncommon when defendants dont want to deal with the hassle of a costly legal defense to something they aren't entirely sure of the possible outcome.

the 16 charges thing is also standard.. i prosecuted one of those clown cases where i had like 18 counts of "assault with a dangerous weapon" and 18 additional counts of "assault while masked"..

I know that this is common practice, but it still boggles my mind to actually read all the things people get charged with. There was one instance I read about where a guy got drunk, drove the wrong way on the highway, and caused a crash that killed the passengers in the car. He was charged with like 20 crimes, and they were all like: involuntary manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, assault, assault with a deadly weapon, negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, reckless driving
