I read your post yesterday and was puzzled since it was the opposite of what I'd seen while skimming the news.

She very clearly supported single payer. Then one of her aides made a post saying shed be open to discussing other avenue of healthcare. Then she reaffirmed her support for single payer.

My guess is he took only the info from part two of that three part outline and used it tk inform his opinion.

In the process he maligned Vaya as a troll for calling out his bull****

We all agree that regardless of whether Birdman is right or wrong about this specific instance of whatever Harris is proposing, that she is a bad news neoliberal, right?

Like I assume that she isn't your top pick Master? I hope not at least.
01-30-2019 , 04:08 PM
Harris is probably in my 2nd to last tier.
01-30-2019 , 04:13 PM
From your source

"As the furor grew, a Harris adviser on Tuesday signaled that the candidate would also be open to the more moderate health reform plans, which would preserve the industry, being floated by other congressional Democrats. It represents a compromise position that risks angering 'Medicare for all' proponents, who view eliminating private health insurance as key to enacting their comprehensive reform."
01-30-2019 , 04:14 PM
EB, are you factoring in the "can draw enough votes to beat Trump" component?

she got that magic iykwim

When you say you are for Medicare for all, then upon getting pressured say “no I’m open to keeping private healthcare too” I’m not sure how else you could read that but backtracking. This milquetoast “i support X but I will accept a plan that is not X” is total bull****. And only the most naive person would interpret it otherwise

an advisor signaled? yep, she's definitely out then

damn, where'd I put those torches?
01-30-2019 , 04:16 PM
Like if you are unhappy with the term “backtracking” fine. But she is clearly not a proponent of Medicare for all beyond saying it to get votes

I don’t know what torches you are talking about. The only torches I saw were from her donors and corporate Dems when they found out she supported Medicare for all and forced her campaign to soften their stance.
01-30-2019 , 04:18 PM
Kamala Harris is an otherwise awful candidate. I don’t know why we are bending over backwards to interpret her as more progressive than she is on this one topic where she isn’t unequivocally in support of Medicare for all
01-30-2019 , 04:22 PM
The idea that I am getting out torches for an awful candidate like Harris is hilarious. As if I supported her before until I found THIS out

Racist ban?

I feel like I shouldn’t have to teach the thread how politics works every time we go through another one of these god forsaken elections
01-30-2019 , 04:40 PM
I’ll take American Presidential elections for 200 Alex...

Answer: you have the candidate publicly pay lip service to a popular progressive idea but use an under the radar messenger that most voters won’t pay attention to you signal her intention to pivot once she has managed to secure the nomination that requires more progressive stances to keep your rich donors happy.

What is “how do you trianglulate as a Democrat in the US presidential election”?
01-30-2019 , 04:41 PM
****ing seriously it’s like everyone’s first election every four years. I’m sure all of you will act surprised about Harris turning into a typical centrist once she secured the nomination or becomes President. Wonder “who could have seen this coming???”
01-30-2019 , 04:42 PM
Public and private positions I think is the term used nowadays.

Look how similar these numbers are. It matters very little who we put up against Trump. We should get the best person we can. Harris ain't it from what I'm seeing.

You have to look at it on a state-by state basis not nationally. (And i think this is what ianaww is alluding to). It probably matters more than you think.

snapshot polls are ~worthless

sampling issues, timing, honesty, accuracy, weight ("somewhat dislike" ) etc

they probably have decent retrospective explanatory power in aggregate, but an individual, prospective poll is nothing to bank on

Recent poll in Michigan (possibly the single most important state in 2020):

https://www.clickondetroit.com/michi...le-in-michigan

Quote:
Joe Biden leads 53.3 percent - 40.3 percent over Donald Trump, with only 5.3 percent of voters undecided.
Kamala Harris leads 46.6 percent-42.4 percent over Donald Trump, with 9.7 percent of voters undecided.
Bernie Sanders leads 52.0 percent-41.2 percent over Donald Trump, with only 5.5 percent of voters undecided.
Elizabeth Warren leads 45.8 percent-42.5 percent over Donald Trump, with 10.3 percent of voters undecided
Trump seems pretty stuck at 40-43.
