they focus on the pain, the only thing that's real.

of course it will have an effect, but the effect will not be total or even insurmountable

Governments already attempt or pretend to regulate them.

I don't think more regulation is the answer to problems in general though.

And specifically as far as values go--it would be Hollywood/the music industry/gatekeeping media

Things that regulating would be dangerous. Why I always say education is what we need.

I'm sure it's not a great idea for Google to become an arbiter of acceptable expression. Also I thought in the past platform providers mostly tried to avoid it as a condition of maintaining a certain legal immunity from being responsible for content? Something like that.

I don't think we have a lot of precedent for the current situation. I wouldn't underestimate the size of the effect that Google or Facebook can have on shaping discourse. I'm not really sure what the best approach is to try to regulate or rationalize these problems from a public policy perspective. These are interesting problems. I thought CloudFlare was right to point out that due process is probably more important than free speech when they addressed a similar issue.

Quick point of order, we all agree the original version of this is better, right? Not saying I don’t like the Cash version but it annoys me that everyone pretends like the cover is obviously better

due process is just any process that's due, or so my lawyer friends say

NiN version has a stark, sublime quality that underlines the lyrical content.

Cash's version is like a dancing bear, we focus not on how well he does it but that he does it at all.

it's true that "free speech" is only a right wrt the government

that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be concerned with "big brother" type policies of corporations

I noticed a while ago that if you expressed concern about the lack of consideration given to the social impact of tech developments and the consequent power in the hands of a small number of people (who share many psychological characteristics) the response I got was often effectively, “don’t worry, they deeply understand tech”. _tech_ isn’t the concern; it’s society I think they don’t get. Move fast and break things is their mantra and lo, that’s not necessarily a great social outcome.
