Protectionism is not just misguided, it’s regressive
I think this is generally correct, and increasingly so as the global economy becomes more interdependent, with the caveat that it is too general

protectionism is a useful tool for certain limited purposes

strategic resources, for example, might be rationally subject to export taxes to keep the resources around

resources/goods that have a negative effect on society, like opium, can rationally be subject to trade bans

Trump doesn't understand the difference between a ledger imbalance and a trade imbalance.
we know he's familiar with ledger imbalances

Good thing the money is all make-believe and he's got his people at the fed now.

Trouble is that you can do that, but the countries that do automate then leap ahead in economic power and then invade you.

Meh, begging the question I think.

These ****ing idiots can not stop literally shooting themselves in the foot.

During NRA conventions, gun injuries drop 20% nationwide—63% in hosting state

NRA's director of public affairs, Jennifer Baker, called the study “absurd.” She continued: "This study is another example of when data and numbers fly in the face of logic and common sense.”
03-02-2018 , 06:42 PM
That has got to be variance
03-02-2018 , 07:20 PM
Also what even is the argument? That nra conventions promote better gun safety or that because people are at nra conventions that they don't have time to shoot themselves?

there is no argument, there are just numbers. you understand how studies work?

but yes, the idea is that these idiots shoot themselves and others accidentally on a regular basis and can't while they are at a convention

They should now look and see what happens when Nascar comes to town.

Might be onto something.

The Trump administration is considering military action against North Korea if the rogue regime successfully builds a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the administration's latest thinking. Senior national security officials believe a nuclear armed Pyongyang represents an unacceptable risk to the US.

Beyond the missile threat to the US homeland, the national security officials pushing for military action believe that if North Korea becomes a full nuclear power, it will proliferate, potentially sharing nuclear and missile technology with states such as Iran, Pakistan and Libya, and non-state actors.

Such a prospect would increase the nuclear threat to US interests. That possibility, according to these officials, is ultimately more dangerous to the US and the region than conventional military action to thwart Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, despite the risk of significant civilian and military casualties in such a conflict.

"All the damage that would come from a war would be worth it in terms of long-term stability and national security," Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who has had multiple conversations with President Donald Trump about North Korea, told CNN.

Police: Man spits on black child, calls him racial slur

i saw this headline without really reading it, and i thought it meant that a cop spit on the kid(who the article said was a toddler), but reading the article i realized it wasn't a cop, but just some other random crazed racist.

You know it occurs to me there is an interesting pattern. Teachers in West Virginia lead a massive statewide strike. Now teacher in Oklahoma sound like they are planning to do the same. Meanwhile, Florida simultaneously approves a $67 million dollar plan to arm and train teachers with guns. Hmmmm

Did you know many retail workers (like packers, floor staff - bottom of the pile) have non-compete clauses in their contracts? That means you work for say McDonalds (though I do not know if maccas has this) you could not work for KFC in that year.

This is a really effective way of removing bargaining power from labor. No wonder wages never rises.

Free Enterprise does not equal freedom.

moral quandary.....

so there is this guy i play poker with. he seems like a nice guy. he often says nice things to me. never seen him get angry or rude. he always brings his wife and she is definitely super nice.

the guy has factories in asia and pays his worker $40 a month.

should i criticize him?

we are playing 5/10 if it makes a difference. he usually buys in for minimum $500
