so what is usa gonna look like after ca, fla, and tx all die from covid19? next month
06-26-2020 , 08:24 PM
Probably around exactly as it is now.
06-26-2020 , 08:29 PM
Doesn't NY still have way more cases than texas and fla?

Yeah, the more I think about it, the right number was probably more like 4 or 5.

Just "Bernie Sanders 2020" is like a 2 or 3 on that scale. Putting Gloria La Riva in the on-deck circle can't be worth more than 2 extra points.

That said, that is an AWFUL tweet from Bernie there.

A 10% reduction in the US military budget by my research gets us down to 2017 levels. That's absurd.

By active cases, yes.

But Texas and especially Florida are absolutely soaring with new cases.
06-26-2020 , 08:42 PM
ny has 375k active cases

ca has 200k

ny is getting 500 new cases a day. ca is getting 5k new cases a day

~60% of ca cases are in los angeles (iirc)

Seems like lots of right wing internet journalistas hanging out by the Lincoln statue in DC tonight, at least until they’re getting chased out. Still standing afaik but the night is young.
06-26-2020 , 10:06 PM
get lincoln!!!!!

so i was thinking... when one of us gets nominated for the supreme court, they're gonna come and read this thread! i'm really looking forward to them reading all of met's posts
06-26-2020 , 10:12 PM
it's probably too late now because the lazy bougie imperialist protesters are done. but it would have been fun to play a game guessing which statue was next to come down

i'll take andrew jackson in washington dc
06-26-2020 , 10:28 PM
i'd like to take a tour of the whitehouse with birdman. i think i could write up a good TR

first i think we should learn the lyrics of the soviet anthem to sing in the whitehouse

and i'd need to pick out the right t-shirt, probably get one printed up for the occasion
06-26-2020 , 10:32 PM
I live like 30 minutes from the whitehouse

lets do it
06-26-2020 , 10:45 PM
have you ever toured the whitehouse?

i seriously would like to. i don't want to get arrested, but i'm more than willing to get kicked out
06-26-2020 , 10:48 PM
docent: hello, welcome to the...

filthy: the whitehouse was built by slaves, right? actually, washington dc is named after a slave owner. and owning slaves wasn't even the worst thing about the genocidal racist george washington

regardless of your political affiliation, you have to admit this is a beautiful song:

there are lots of genociders and slavers for me to criticize on the tour, right?

Possibly as concerning, though, are more and more examples of non-fatal consequences. A 16 year old was admitted with what looked exactly like a heart attack, but it was post-COVID. People have been sick for like 3 months after recovery. Some pictures of lungs that docs can look at and see who had COVID just on the picture.

Does it even make much sense to talk about a single fatality rate, given the differential rate across ages? Like it will be higher in somewhere like Italy, where they're older on average, it might be that the spike in US cases might be more amongst YOLO young people, and hence you have high cases with a lower fatality rate?

But yes, there's been a few things recently about the long shadow it casts. One potential reason Boris Johnson is doing such a terrible job might be lingering covid problems.

Sir, would you step in here a moment, my manager wants a brief word.

[Tour moves off in another direction, door clangs shut. Filthy finds himself outside on the street/in a locked unlit cell/in a room full of SF beatniks next to a sign saying "the real tour this way"/in Ivanka and Jared's jacuzzi room, Ivanka winks, and beckons for filthy to enter/falling through the darkness]

The government's priority list is:
- claim covid is totally fine
- find someone else to blame it on when the chips fall
- get the pubs open
.
.
- some other ****
.
.
- actually do something about it

Since bojo refused to fire his chief advisor for blatantly breaking the rules, faith in the lockdown is crumbling. BoJo looks like he's still not really recovered, Cummings is being exposed as not that great actually (surprise surprise) and the government's strategy seems to have been 'if people die in a care home, does it even count?'

As far as I can tell, progress in the modern advanced democracies (i.e. places other than the US & the UK) seems to be quite promising.
06-27-2020 , 02:59 AM
im pretty amazed at how awful uk govt has been. but i don't think even bojo could say something like "we gotta stop testing cuz then the cases will go away"

and it's appalling that usa stands for the president to say something so mind boggling idiotic, dangerous, and harmful
06-27-2020 , 03:01 AM
saying that for several days and doubling down should clearly be grounds for removal

and it's like 500th on the list of things he's said and done that everyone should agree disqualifies him to lead the country

Umm, for a while they had a policy of forcing patients out of hospitals into care home, and not counting care home deaths. That's worse than just not testing.
