Anyone interested in a Tournament Player Of The Year pool?

The abridged rules:
Starting August 1st.
No entry fee.
Slow draft to 20 players.
After draft discard any player at any time for any unpicked player.
Scoring: National champ = 1 point, Continental champ=3, worldwide champ = 5
Determination:
Only live results so playing well and playing a lot helps. After that, these three criteria are equal:
1) Playing all games well.
2) Playing well in big buyin tournaments.
3) Running deep in big fields.
Complete rules will be posted if there is interest.
Let me know if interested.

I'll add a bit of info from time to time so you'll have the complete picture by August 1st.

Here are the timelines.
For the players it will run from August 1st until the last results are in for WSOP 2020.
For our entrants we'll start selecting players on August 1st and have one round of picks per week so that we'll have a complete set of 20 players by the end of the year. This should be fine because all the major tournaments are in the first 6 months of the year with nothing much happening from August through December.
Starting in January there are no more picks but entrants can switch players if they like.
When the WSOP starts then there is no more switching.
If you miss the start of the pool you can still enter. For example, if you miss the first 4 weeks you can pick 4 players (from the pool of players not picked yet) to catch up.
The pool will be open to new entries right up to day 1 of WSOP 2020: just pick 20 unpicked players.

And now a word on the secondary reason to run this pool.

I'm interested in finding out who the Player Of The Year really is. We have the GPI but I think it lacks two important criteria:
1) Ability to play poker, not jusrt NLH or NLH and PLO. The winner here is going to have to show an ability to play a variety of poker variants. This will be 1/3 of the scoring. Players like Daniel Negreanu and Stephen Chidwick have a big advantage here.
2) Enthusiasm. In this scoring system, the more you play the more points you get. It's not just your top "x" number of cashes, it's the grand total. So, players like Ari Engel who pops up everywhere will have an advantage.

So, that said, let's speculate on who might be picked in the 1st round.
DANIEL NEGREANU: has everything except enthusiasm. He goes crazy during the WSOP but doesn't play much the rest of the year. And now he's not the PokerStars ambassador he'll have even less incentive to travel.
STEPHEN CHIDWICK: should be ranked #1 but he's starting a family. Will this slow him down as far as number of tournaments goes?
MIKE LEAH: another contender starting a family.
BRYN KENNEY: high roller who won the Aussie Millions main event and is a chip leader in the WSOP stud8 as we speak. If he can repeat this next year....
DZMITRY URBANOVICH: don't laugh! Urbanovich has one big advantage. Whereas the previous examples are better players, Urbanovich has 1 big advantage, HM shows that he is from Poland (he's really from Belarus but we'll go with whatever HM says). There's a point for every National champ and the others are in huge player pools (England, USA and Canada) but Dzmitry should have an easier time winning Poland.
MARIA HO: I've decided to add 3 points for best female player. No clear favourite here. Maria's as good a pick as any.

So, the selecting won't be so easy. Should be fun to see how the selecting goes.

As you noticed from the last post, I've added 3 points for top female player.
I wanted to add 3 for top senior but how do I find everyone's birthday?
It just struck me....instead of top senior make it top veteran!
Top player to cash pre-Moneymaker, pre-Negreanu, pre-Hellmuth? Sounds good.

As you see this is a work in progress. We'll have everything set in stone by August 1st but we're still open for suggestions.
Especially, suggestions for more categories that we can award points for. Any ideas?

WOW! Just had a brainstorm!

Why not set points on the number of players in that pool on Hendon Mob.
Player Of The Year gets points equal to all the players on HM.
Women's POY gets points based on how many women on HM.
Azerbiajan POY gets points based on how many Azerbiajani players on HM.
and so on.....

This is what we have so far for scoring:

Points are awarded based on number of players identified by Hendon Mob:
all countries (per Hendon Mob)
all USA states (per HM)
all Canadian provinces (per HM)
(example: HM shows 5433 players from the Netherlands so if you have the top player from the Netherlands you get 5433 points)

There is a 13,000 point cap on all players.
The exceptions are the bonus points which are:

Player Of The Year: +5000
Woman's Player Of The Year: +3000
Veteran (pre-Moneymaker) Player Of The Year: +2000
Super Veteran Player Of The Year (pre-Hellmuth): +1000
Woman's Veteran (pre-Moneymaker) Player Of The Year: +1000
continental Europe Player Of The Year: +1000
continental Asia Player Of The Year: +1000
continental North America Player Of The Year: +1000
continental South America Player Of The Year: +1000
Africa + the islands Player Of The Year: +1000
Former WSOP Main Event Champ Player Of The Year: +1000
Most Cashes: +1000
Most countries cashed in: +1000

still open for any more bonus point ideas
(pool doesn't start til August 1st)

So, a woman super veteran would get 26,000 (with bonus points) if she made POY.
Are there any woman super veterans still playing?
Both Barbara Enright and Marsha Waggoner cashed in this year's WSOP.

Which tournaments will be tracked for scoring?

Not enough hours in the day to track every tournament, so...
We'll track all series that last at least a week with at least 7 open tournaments.
You can follow these by using the Hendon Mob poker festivals list.

For example:
The August 1-12 WSOP circuit in Cherokee might be first (they haven't listed their tournaments yet).
The August 1-13 Seminole HardRock Open will be included.

Not only can you play the pool but you can also get points for yourself in the pool!!!!

I'm listed as British Columbia so I'll be up against the likes of Greg Mueller. And since I haven't cashed in anything since 2016 you might want to pass on picking me!

HeroValue however does have a good shot at winning the England points. Chidwick and Owen may have something to say about that.

And now the meat and potatoes: how the players will be ranked. Don't worry about this because the computer will do the scoring. However, understanding the concept will help you make your picks.

Rank #1: how many games can they play. Just add up the number of different games cashed in. Any game is different from another because:
1) the player gets a different # of cards
2) its a flop game, a stud game or a draw game
3) its No Limit, Pot Limit or Fixed Limit
4) its high, low or high/low split
Then there are some special games that don't fit in the above categories like Open Face Chinese or Drawmaha. They are considered separate games.
Then there are the mixed game tournaments. We separate them by number of games. For example Triple Omaha, Triple Stud and Triple Triple Draw would all be counted as "3 game mix".
Dealer's Choice is a separate mixed game.

Rank #2: High Roller ability. Simply add the buyin amount of all cashed tournaments. Example: cash in a 50K buyin tournament = get 50K points.

Rank #3: Big Field ability: Simply add every total field divided by finishing position. Example: finish 3rd in a 9000 field tournament = get 9000/3 = 3000 points.

All the players are ranked in each of the 3 categories. Then the 3 categories are added together.
Example: Daniel Negreanu finishes 45th in # of games played ability, #78 in high roller ability and #16 in big field ability. His score would be 45+78+16 = 139. Low score wins.

I think that this will be better than the GPI for Player Of The Year because enthusiasm (total all your cashes not just the top few) and inquistiveness (count all the different games you can play) matters. Also, we'll have POY for all different areas of the world plus women's, veterans, rookie of the year etc.

A couple of questions for those who are considering entering:

Should we put in the actual country for each player or just go with the HM flag?
For example, there are numerous Austria and Malta players who aren't really from there.

Should we ignore the players who have asked HM to hide their results?
Example, finisher #29 in event #2 of the WSOP.

I know I've been kinda busy with the WSOP Fantasy Pool lately but just so you know.....

It's coming August 1st.

An all year event.
We'll crown a Player Of The Year.

So far, we have 7.5 billion entries!!!
That's right, by just tweaking the entry rules we have everybody in the world on board.

Each month (til May 2020) you will receive a list with 10 sets of 2 players. Just pick the player that you think will do better in 2019-2020. Most correct answers wins.
However, if your pick is wrong and the unpicked player makes POY in their category, YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED.
However, there is a "pass" button with each set of players. If you think answering is too risky, you can just click the "pass" button and avoid the risk.

For example, on the August list you are asked to pick between Michael Mizrachi & Robert Mizrachi. The category is "Florida". If you pick the wrong Mizrachi and that Mizrachi ends up being Florida's best player, you are disqualified. The "pass" button is always available.

If everyone who fills out an entry form is disqualified then everyone who didn't fill out a form is the winner. That's how we already have 7.5 billion entries.
The form for August is already available. Doesn't need to be completed til August 31st.

If anyone is having trouble with the form, let me know.

I've already forgotten how to fill mine out: when I link it puts me in edit mode not entry mode. When I figure this out I'll submit my entry so I can ensure that its working.

Figured it out. So, we have 1 submitted form and 7.5 billion who have not submitted a form yet.

Also, the deadline for the first month's form is August 31. You can also revise a submitted form until (and including) August 31st.

I'm also working a list of players who's flag on HM is not correct (based on birthplace). Also working on veterans list.

Looks like the first tournament in the pool will be the $600 NLH Deep Stack at 11AM (local time) at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood Florida. That will be followed at noon by a $400 FLO8.
Asian Poker Tour at Incheon starts on the 2nd.

And now for tournaments that aren't included:
Invitationals ( I hear there is a 1M Euro invitational only being put on by Triton Poker on August 1st - it will not be included).
Recurring tournaments - no daily or nightly or weekly tournaments
Survivor tournaments
Satellites
Shootouts - players who finish in a clear position are counted - tied positions are not

I do see the invitational now - its part of a series that started on July 31st. We only start counting tournaments on August 1st. Series that start before August 1st do not count even if some of the tournaments are played after August 1st.

I was just thinking that adding me VS Rdsxfan might be interesting.
I play a few tournaments each year but haven't cashed since 2016.
Rdsxfan says he plans to play the Senior and Super Senior at WSOP 2020.
Sounds like a even match.

Another other 2+2ers who would like to be in the pool as players as well as entrants?

I've now put the rules into a file.
Yes, I am tweaking the rules as we get closer to August 1st. But don't worry, once we get to August the rules will not change.

Here's a list of players whose HM flag doesn't match their birthplace or where the HM state is not their birthstate. This is just so you can check out the competition easier. It will not change after August 1st: After that what HM says, goes.
It also includes a veteran and super veteran list. This list is not complete: its just to save you some time with your research.

Just had a look at my GOOGLE FORM to see if there were any new submissions and.....
the form had changed!
I thought I had to make it accessible so people could submit it but it looks like that allows people to edit the questions!
Please keep me up-to-date on any problems you have with the form.

I'll also put the questions here so you can just write in your 10 answers without using the form if you like.
