Not dead! I don't want to make promises but I should reveal the next category this week. Reopening all the songs for my second (or third?) listen weeks later...

edit - apparently I missed something, which is just fine by me!

Still have a couple of decisions towards the end, but let's do this. Pretty good group of songs overall.

The only one I really dreaded re listening to, in 11th with one base point...

Spoiler:
KarmaDope
Hole - Skinny Little *****
Fem Vocals / Comeback(+2)
Not crazy about this. Mildly abrassive without anything that makes me want to listen. I think I know what it wants to be (or what I would want it to be), but it doesn't get there for me. It's not that I hate the song, it's just kind of mildly irritating without something to make me overlook that aspect. More irritating with re listens, the first bit just immediately puts me off.

In 10th with 2 base points, an old timey song that seems to miss a bit...

Spoiler:
CrimsonFox
Roy Brown - Butcher Pete Part 1
<1960 (+2) / Blues (+1)
Leaning pretty heavily on fallout, eh? This is ok I guess, not nearly as good as let's go sunning. There are a lot better examples of this style. Didn't really grow with future listens.

In 9th with 3 base points, a song from a few decades ago...
Spoiler:

Deep Purple - Burn

I don't dislike it, but I don't terribly like it either. I like the riff around 2:50. I don't really know what to say about it, it doesn't make any strong impressions, but it does go on a long time. Idk

This is pretty nice. I like the arrangement and general style. It feels like they are trying keep things, umm, a bit too tight? Like in the solo section they cut loose a bit more, they should have more of that going on throughout I think. So I guess what I am trying to say is they feel a bit stiff (?), trying to keep things too clean (?), idk, something along those lines for most of the song and it takes away from it.

In 7th with 5 base points is a song with a really simple arrangement behind vocals...

Kind of pleasant, like the music more than the vocals. Holds up well on further listens, still don't like some of the voacals but pretty good overall.

Of course I know this song pretty well; it's a classic for a reason and that reason is that it embodies the cheesiest of the 80's music tropes while still being extremely entertaining. Also, I can't hear this without thiking of Gross Point Blank (this is a great soundtrack song). I struggled hard with where to put this because it is so familiar to me and has so much connotation. This is probably the lowest it would have gone, and that's just because I was listening to the song I was going to have 6th and thought "is this really lower than 99 LB?" there is a big pile up of songs that could go anywhere from here on out.

Edit - missed a song before the song that was going to be 6th, which is now below.

I do like piano jazz, though this isn't my favorite. For some reason she reminds me of Benny Green. She is on spotify, going to check out some of her stuff after this walrus. Even though this isn't my favorite piece, it is still pretty good the artist is clearly very talented.

Nice simple old style blues. Good vocals, really emphasized by the small, and somewhat unusual, arrangement. This is really good, I am having a hard time ordering these last few.

ikr? I think you could keep all the same songs and add a ton of points because they fit in so many of the bonus point categories.

This was two but the song that passed it is growing on me, and it started off really high.
A swing and a…hit. Dare I try to google translate this? Yeah, I didn't think that would go so well, couldn't even find the lyrics. Anyway, chill with vocals that add to it rather than kill it. Stands up well on further listening, this is really good. You might want to actually listen to the whole song you submitted here

First impression: I like this. I also love their aesthetic in this video (which wasn't the version that was submitted, but blocked in US, etc.) This has a clean, classic feel too it. Definitely feels like more than the sum of its parts. Reminds me a lot of something, I want to say the knack but I don't think that's it.
As noted above, I'm liking this more the more I listen to it. It feels oddly nostalgic to me. I'm pretty happy with this submission and will be checking out more of their stuff.

Sampha - (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano
Soul / Male Voc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NSuIYwBxu4

Man this is crazy somber and malancholy. The amount of emotion this guy conveys is pretty astounding. God damnit, just relistened to it, and it is really strong. I don't think he should have had that bit where he harmonized, his raw voice is much more powerful. Very moving performance.
Maybe the bridge with the harmonized part is needed for a respite.
Here are the lyrics from a you tube comment:
Quote:
No one knows me like the piano in my mother's home
You would show me I have something, some people call a soul
And you drop-topped the sky, oh you arrived when I was three years old
No one knows me like the piano in my mother's home

You know I left, I flew the nest
And you know I won't be long
And in my chest you know me best
And you know I'll be back home

An angel by her side, all the times I knew we couldn't cope
They said that it's her time, no tears in sight, I kept the feelings close
And you took hold of me and never, never, never let me go
Cause no one knows me like the piano in my mother's home
(In my mother's home)
