If you're coming up with 10 great things to show someone don't you think of the greatest one first usually?

I do not know enough songs in categories with bonuses.

Spoiler:

A1 Metal/Inst (+1) - pre 1960 (+2)
Santo & Johnny "Sleep Walk"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rwfqsjimRM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBRCvVpknvg - Cleaner recording without the intro

OK, this is a really nice. It sounds very familiar, I wonder if that is because it is used a lot in soundtracks or was just really influential (or both). I love the whatever that lead instrument is and the twangy thing they got going on. (I used to know how to describe that better, but I don't recall right now)

Score: 15
It inspired fleetwood Mac’s Song albatross which inspired the Beatles song Sun King.

JM3-rand-by-youtube-search is your frand in that case.

But, c'mon - you know all about the time limit bonus cats: <1960 and 1960-1980 are completely in your expertise. And then - not that you don't have candidates for other cats - eg there must be plenty of USSR "Asian" (other side of the Urals) artists/records across those two periods you could use (eg, I'm pretty sure anyone living in Novisibirsk when making a record would count per fnord's clarifications in the signup thread)... & you certainly are well on top of
  • Significant Classical components
  • Intrumental
  • Non English Vocals
How hard is all of that? Eg, do

 time time classical
non-eng voc
instr
east-USSR

or

 time time east-USSR
non-eng voc
instr
classical

Resubmit and delete all Italian songs ime

Quite curious what you'll think of some of those songs.

Constructing the entry was quite fun, iirc I backed my way into having to submit a folk/soul song

Had a lot of fun putting the entry together, had me properly flicking through my playlists to fit the categories! Glad you enjoyed the MCM, I enjoyed rediscovering it when I was trying to find a good fit for that cat!

My order from best to worst of the first round (my track excluded)

1. The Avalanches - Because I'm Me (I always liked this much more than fnord did .. I still think it's pretty decent, though I haven't heard it much in the interim)
2. Oliver Mtukudzi - Tozeza Baba (maybe I give "this kind of thing" too much slack, he's nowhere near some of the better Zimbabwe artists from his period, but I can't diss it too much - and I kinda like his gruff vocal style)
3. The Seatbelts - Space Lion (haven't seen the film, so not influenced by that, maybe a bit meandering)
4. tricot - Ochansensu-su (not as good when I was able to listen all the way through as I had hoped/it seemed hinted at. there are bits and pieces that it might be possible assemble into something good - I'll follow fnord's hint and look up some of their other tracks later. and it is decently racous. but overall a little disappointing)
5. Mad Capsule Markets - Tribe (the version submitted is notably worse, imo, than the remix. too rockist for me, but not terrible, and the remix version, at least, is bearable)
--
6. Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk (epitome of meh. I guess in a minor way culturally interesting to see what was on offer literally besides rawk in the late 50s in the US)
--
7. Yes - Then (I hate "Yes". I hate everything they ever did. Nuke it from orbit. This fits right in to my understanding of them.)
8. Roger Glover & Guests - Love Is All (late sub-(late)-Beatles pap. Just garbage. At least this sort of thing was shortly thereafter washed away by punk.* *caveat: "Just Like Punk Never Happened".)
9. Rhiannon Giddens - At The Purchaser's Option (I'm not going to be a fan of this kind of thing any day of the week, so  )
10. Toto Cutugno - L'Italiano (good grief)

--

good work everyone, see you all next Sunday for Round 2

This might be the case, working a bunch of overtime right now (in addition to all the normal family stuff) which is leaving me wiped at night during the week.

Yeah, this. It certainly took me long enough to minimally get in an entry.

when I saw you had posted in this thread I hoped you had bought us a game of Boggle to play whilst we wait.

possible order for you to listen in:
Spoiler:
If I put my song in at 0 and take out yours, if I was forced to guess I'd say your preferred order will be working towards the middle from the outsides except for #6, so something like
9-8-6-0-3-2-1-4-7-5
'tho you might despise 3 and I'm not sure about your ordering of 0,1,2

your grid is made up of things like:

Solo ArtistOne Word Band NameNorth American4+ Members in Group
1980sLead Singer Older than 502+ GuitarsMale & Female Members
Band no longer togetherPiano InvolvedMale SingerSong shorter than 3 mins
AsianBrass InstrumentEuropean2000s

and each thing you submit has to satisfy everything in a chain of at least 4 and you get bonus points for longer chains

Hmmm, scoring would need to be adjusted bc giving someone 11 points for a terrible song that fits 8 categories seems bad.
