All right, if eleanor's pick started housenuts' 4 hours at 4:33, then I should be up now. In the gambling category, I take the longest of long shots...

July 2015 -- $1000 on Leicester City to win the Barclays Premier League at 5,000-1

Hopefully I'll make some other decent scores along the way, but knowing I've got $5,000,000 waiting for me in 2016 will be worth it regardless. This was the top pick on my board, having never heard of the Bitcoin pizza story.

Yep Leicester city and Bitcoin were the top two I thought of

I suppose it would be discourteous to snipe housenuts here; I need to research how much bling this will make me anyway

but if you can PM me your pick housenuts, let me know how sad I am. I won't be making a billion, but I'll be close.

meh, housenuts no longer online AFAIK, **** it, I'm rushing the podium in a most ungentlemanly fashion. Deal with it.

Starting with a sports wager, because that's how I roll.

I thought about Leicester City of course, but then I remembered something that would probably eclipse that. Holy **** was I ever right.

I give you: The 2005 Kentucky Derby

The 2005 Derby was won by Giacomo, which was a 52-1 long shot to win the race. But no, I'm not going to settle for those piddly odds.

The second place finisher was 70-1 long shot Closing Argument. But no, I'm not settling for that, nor the exacta that paid a handsome $9814 for a $2 wager.

The Kentucky Derby accepts all manner of wagers on the race, including the always exciting superfecta, where you have to pick the top 4 horses in exact order. This is pretty hard to do, and even harder when you have the 52-1 and 70-1 long shots at the top of the card. Fortunately for me I'm feeling lucky.

With my winning 10-18-12-17 superfecta ticket, I'm really rich. How rich? Let's find out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNJbaBnVyX8&t=4m43s

Let's see, if a $2 Superfecta pays THAT, a $1k superfecta would pay 500 times that... so carry the two... add the extra zeroes... looks like I'm worth

$864,253,500.

Not bad for a little over two minutes work.

With my perfect bracket entry I will get $1,000,000,000 from this guy

it might be a little late, and an unwelcome suggestion anyway, but why are our picks limited? why do we have to do 2 shares in companies, and 2 gambling and 2 other? why not let us have free reign?

Nittery: Those two picks are toying with the rules. I mean if you can tell me what the perfect bracket is in 2014 without research, cool. It is kind of like wagering a perfect 64 team parlay.

/Nittery

Whatever, I'll invest in Apple. Lets see what this gets me.

Jan 1 1997 Apple: .536
Today: 158.67

158.67/.536*1000=296026

But Stock Splits

7-for-1
June 9, 2014
2-for-1
Feb. 28, 2005
2-for-1
June 21, 2000

So times 28 comes to 8.3 million

I mean the point of this draft is if I was instantly transported back to 1997, I would still know to bet Leicester City, I would know to invest in Bitcoin. But without previous research, I wouldn't know the Superfecta in the 2005 KY Derby, or what the perfect bracket was in 2014.

You can only get what's in the pool, though. Taking it 500x would just mean you significantly dilute the payout.

can i buy a 6 hour $1000 insurance policy on the world trade center?

i'll pick that if i can
Making your Fortune Mini Draft - Game Thread Quote

my 2nd pick

without research, i don't know which flights to buy, except united flight 93 on sept 11th 2001. i'll buy a ticket on that flight, a video camera, and a parachute. i'll record everything until a little after the passengers take over the plane, then i'll jump out with my video.

i'll sit on my plane ticket and my video, pretend i'm dead. then after all the govt bs stories come out. i'll go on that english chat show with the gay dude host and tell the world.

who is going to give you 6 hours worth of insurance?

what would the payout be?

decent chance that you couldn't find anyone to make that deal who would make good on the payout

Also I can totally see you not surviving the parachute jump
Making your Fortune Mini Draft - Game Thread Quote
09-19-2017 , 08:03 AM
supposedly the passengers were trying to land the plane. it was probably going pretty slow and low at that time. easy to survive

loyds of london used to insure celebrities body parts. they might do a super short term wtc policy. maybe one day, or one week? i guess i'd take whatever payout they offered.

i just found this...

Quote:
It costs a pretty penny to own Atlanta's tallest skyscraper. At least for insurance.

Insurance costs for the Bank of America Plaza tower on Peachtree Street have skyrocketed by more than 460 percent, according to the annual report that Cousins Properties Inc. filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on March 25. Cousins' insurance coverage costs on Bank of America Plaza jumped from $115,000 in 2001 to $653,000 by the end of 2002, according to the annual report.
so atlanta's tallest tower cost about $330 a day to insure. maybe for 1k for one day loyds of london would give me 1/10th the value of the world trade center.

I'm fine with you picking it I'm just not sure if it will be a success or not

Can you insure things that you don't own? If I think that someone else is a ****ty driver then can I get a payout if they crash? I don't really think so...

Back to chuckles
