Right, but (barring spells, which is a pretty big thing to ignore but bear with it), it's not like protections are going to go away. So if we know it now, it's probably still valid information for the rest of the game.
If I had that, I'd probably hold off one more day, accumulate another card and another night of mana, and then decide if the spells I have are ones that are pretty important to cast or if they're just meh. If they're just meh, then I would probably be willing to burn a mana to check on a target.
If your ability says "target player", by the way, I don't think it'll work against players that have protection from whatever color or colors you are. So if you get no result (as opposed to "they don't have any protections"), it's probably because they have protection from your color.
