You go ahead, Gad. All I have is my rankings. I'm gonna write everything as I go. And time has lost all meaning for me since March.

I'm writing everything as I go, too

but as I said, I don't think I'll mostly be writing much

I'll start now then

I'd like to emphasize that THIS IS A PERFECTLY GOOD SONG

Spoiler:
Shadow People - The Limañanas (feat. Emmanuelle Seigner)

Spoiler:
Yeah, although this is a new band, their music is decidedly of a different era that I've never really gotten into. It's hazy, pleasant, you can imagine them playing in a festival in Golden Gate Park in 1970...but there's not much there lyrically, it's a bit repetitive, and I can't appreciate the nuances of psych rock like this. Even listening to it again right now, I can't feel no feels beyond that it's nice in the background. I can see why people like it, but it's not for me.

Not only did I not submit this song, I've never heard this song. Or heard of this band. I'm listening to it now and digging it. There's no way this comes in 10th place if I'm judging (and yes, I saw that Gad likes all of the submissions).

...Okay, this is embarrassing and I apologize in advance, because I sort of screwed up. I usually click through the YouTube links just to see what was submitted before I compile Spotify playlists for myself in these walruses, but it turns out I didn't do that here.

And the reason I know that is that one of the main reasons I ranked this song so low was that it's a song I know, and the original version was on my Spotify playlist but there's a different well-knownish version that is sooo much better. And I was dinging the submitter for submitting the boring original rather than the awesome later version...except that I just checked the YouTube link and ofc the awesome later version is the one that was submitted.

So I'm very sorry to the submitter; this definitely would have finished a few spaces higher if I'd realized that. Not that much higher, because it's a song I know and a song that he knew I would know, but higher nonetheless.

My bad.

Spoiler:
Wild Sex (In the Working Class) (Boingo Alive version) - Oingo Boingo

Spoiler:
This is a pretty great song and if I hadn't spent my errant youth listening to it a ton, it would have been a shoo-in to podium. As it is, it deserved better than 9th. Sorry, Crimson.

If it makes you feel at all better, I'm relistening to it now and it's so much fun and I will actually be putting it in my heavy rotation again, so mission...accomplished?

(In my defense, the original version sort of sucks. In my anti-defense, I should have known that Crimson wouldn't submit the sucky version.)

A very indie song that, and the submitter is going to say that I always say this, and the reason he's going to say that is because I always say this, sounds like something I should like a lot more than I do, and it's hard to explain why.

I guarantee the person who submitted it knows which song it is now.

Spoiler:
Nausea - Jeff Rosenstock

Spoiler:
Maybe it's the hoarse, scream-y aspect of his singing style in parts? And the way he parses the lines? I feel like the lyrics try to tell a story but the song doesn't tell that story, because it's all chopped up? I dunno. I liked it more when I first listened to it, and it didn't hold up on repeated spins.

I could never get into the supposed charms of Zach Braff. Just a smarmy dude with a punchable face as far as I'm concerned.

Spoiler:
Simple Song - The Shins

Spoiler:
Sort of the quintessential easy listening guitar-y indie band for their particular era (without looking -- like, 2004?) -- I never got into them back then, so my primary association is that they're a prominent part of the soundtrack of Zach Braff's Garden State, a movie I found waaaay too earnest and harbor a deep-seated dislike for. Which isn't The Shins's fault, necessarily, but then I kinda find their music pretty earnest as well. It's fine. This song is fine. I just finished listening to it and I can't remember much about it. It's no Forest Whitaker by Bad Books.

I like it. It's not really something I'd put in heavy rotation.

Spoiler:
Myth - Beach House

Spoiler:
Very spacey and atmospheric. I prefer my spacey and atmospheric music a little more bleep-bloop or a little more lounge-y, or a little more bleep-bloop lounge-y (Stereolab!). Not much in the way of beats or hooks or intelligible lyrics, all of which I also enjoy. I know a lot of people like them so I'm sure they're doing many things right!

Spoiler:
I guessed: bwslim69 (I think it was the mild ambient vibe and the fact that you asked for indie songs this game)

Top half! What've we got here? Oh yeah...I enjoyed this.

Spoiler:
Automatic - Big Data (feat. Jenn Wasner)

Spoiler:
I think if it were a bit zippier or a bit more bleep-bloop electronic or a bit catchier or with clearer lyrics it would have ranked more highly. The sort of vocal style around 2:22 (and I guess through most of the chorus) isn't my personal preference, and I think I like the first half more than the second half. But the song wears its length well and it's good!

Just wasn't quite enough of a stand-out to podium

Spoiler:
Dirty Little Secret - Carolyn Mark

Spoiler:
I really enjoy a lot of alt-country and Americana (or, I guess, Canadiana here). I love Kelly Hogan, who is apparently one of Carolyn Mark's contemporaries. And this is a good song. But it's almost too pleasant in its presentation. The lyrics are really cool and really dark, but you would never know it from the vocals and the music. And hey, I love a good song that sounds happy but is secretly sad, but it doesn't click enough for me here.

There's a lot of here here

Spoiler:
Same ****/Complicated - Kimya Dawson

Spoiler:
Nothing quite like Kimya Dawson; I think you're either someone who grooves on her or you're really, really not. No middle ground opinions. Fortunately for the submitter, I like her! This particular song, though, is hard to wrap my arms around...it's very long and shaggy and shambling and at times the lyrics are just far too cliche and at other times they're far too cute, and tbh there are a number of her other songs that probably would have scored better -- but there's still a real charm and sincerity to what she does, and I like a lot of the lyrical phrasings and her unmistakeable delivery. There's a lot in this song to like. It's a long song. And very distinctly her.

Spoiler:
Freak Like Me - Halestorm

Spoiler:
As the submitter no doubt noticed, I have a big soft spot for loud girls with guitars. This is juuuuust on the edge of being too hard for me; I don't like metal at all in virtually any form. But it's grinding and catchy and the vocals are clear as hell, which is kinda my catnip, and it's just really fun. Great energy. It reminds me in different ways of a bunch of stuff I like. Cool song, cool band.

Fatalist Palmistry - WHY?

Spoiler:
Look, I don't love this guy's vocals, honestly. They're super-nasal and remind me of a lot of bands I used to trawl The Hype Machine for in like 2006 or so. But the pace is good and the lyrics are both dense and fun. It changes things up a few times. It's well-constructed. The sound is clean without being slick or over-produced. I actually could have sworn it was Suq who submitted this, because it does have a very Bad Books/Andy Hull vibe to it, but the actual submitter makes sense too. Nice job, buddy.
