1st - Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

Good category fit. Good song. I knew this and I was expecting this. If there was something else really good submitted then it would likely beat this one because of my familiarity with this. The Johnny Cash version is good and has a lot of meaning behind it, but this is the better song if you don't take account of circumstantial stuff
BTW 1st is not a mistake

You guys are smart and can figure it out...

I'm in 1st!

Yeah that is such a great song and better than the more famous version (though that is good too obv). I was worried it would be too obv

It was obvious but I think that's mostly my fault picking this category.

Your choices were:

-Pick something obvious
-Pick something much worse than the famous cover
-Pick something obscure where I don't even know what the cover would be

I believe I am still awaiting an update to one of the entries or I'm just going to put that in last place.

Just come to listen to mine now in prep for reveal and I am missing a submission, I only received 8.

Also, one of the submissions I have got is not eligible as not released in 2019 or 2020. Given that it's just one, I dont think there will be any walrus integrity breaches if I ask Nich to PM that person to resubmit.

I've got my reveal typed up and ready to go. If anyone cares about Led Zeppelin or just wants to see how you scored (honestly, given the submissions, I'm guessing its more of the latter........), then stay tuned this evening!

I was definitely trying to figure out how to submit against a lot of these. Like, for yours, are you interested in just learning what the originals are of really good covers? Or do you want the original to be BETTER than the cover? Etc.

I submitted Last Kiss. I'm surprised you like the original, because I can't stand it. I just thought it was interesting just how different the original and cover are. Cochran's has almost an upbeat sound to it, and given the lyrics, its just very wtf to me. Pearl Jam's has such raw emotion to it and is such an amazing cover, I figured I'd fire it off just on the off-chance you didn't know it

Led Zeppelin-esque Songs

Led Zeppelin is my all-time favorite band. If there's a band I wish I could have seen live during their peak, its them.

This category is pretty wide-open, as LZ weren't afraid to experiment with different styles throughout their career. You've got one of the greatest rock ballads of all time in Stairway to Heaven. One of the best guitar riffs ever on Black Dog. Heavy metal tempo and sounds on Immigrant Song. Funk throwbacks with The Crunge. It goes on and on.

But really, when you think of classic LZ, you're thinking about:
1. Jimmy Page's riffs/solos on guitar
2. Robert Plant's distinctive voice/range
3. John Bonham smashing his drum kit like a monster

And JPJ is just quitely tying it all together.

I was pleasantly surprised that NO ONE submitted any Wolfmother songs. Thank you. I really like them, but I've already got that covered and I was tempted to include them in my exclusion list.

And I'll definitely be checking out more songs by some of these bands. I've never heard of any of these songs and the only bands I knew were the obvious ones (Rush/Soundgarden), and that's exactly what I was hoping for.

To the rankings...I tried to write up a tiny bit about each one...

9. Hiss Golden Messenger - Westering

I'll be real, I couldn't even listen to the whole song. Not digging it at all. Sorry

8. King Crimson - Epitaph

Not feeling this either. I don't get LZ vibes, just feels like a generic rock ballad, but at least I could listen to it, so it gets a nod above #9.

7. Soundgarden - Rhinosaur

Sorry, but Chris Cornell's voice is so distinct and individual, it's hard for me to get past that. This just sounds like Soundgarden to me. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just a different sound.

6. Rush - Finding My Way

Pretty much same comments as the Soundgarden entry. This just sounds like Rush, which again, isn't a bad thing. I just think they have their own sound.

5. Kingdom Come - Get It On

Digging the vocalist, but I'm just not feeling the rest. The drums/guitar just felt like they were along for the ride.

4. Jeff Beck - Shapes of things

This was the hardest one to fit in the rankings. There isn't anything that sticks out. It "feels" like LZ, but the individual pieces don't really feel that way. But there's definitely something about it...

I thought you may say Rhinosaur is too obvious a copy of Dazed and Confused, not that it doesn’t sound like Zeppelin

3. Richard & Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights

While this is a much slower tempo, and the vocals are definitely different, this is one of the few on the list where I really enjoyed the drum and guitar lines. They felt like they accentuated the vocals rather than just kind of background mimicking, if that makes sense.

2. Greta Van Fleet - Age of Man

Definitely has the right sound/feeling. Again, I wish the drums/guitar had a bit more of their own life, but it was enjoyable and I'll def check out more of their work.
