I don't think it was that great of a category in hindsight. I think there are few good choices because famous covers are usually better than unknown originals.

I was expecting Prince - Nothing Compares 2U and Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah, [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] and got 2 out of 4
I was considering Leanord Cohens Hallelujah, but, do you think a single cover is more famous?

In the end i thought it was too much of a risk.

Bonus Track - A lesser known cover that is better than the original

Hudson Crozier - Call Me Maybe

Note: This won a 50 person walrus category of "Bad Covers" yesterday

There are not too many songs, so I'm going to space them out long enough for you to listen along

9th - Curtiss Maldoon - Sepheryn (Ray of Light)

I don't like this song very much, I don't know what the cover is even after searching. Possibly because I'm not even sure what the title of the song is. I could search further and try to find the cover, but I don't think it would help the ranking of this song. Too far on the side of folk for my liking. Indie would be preferable.

That's a Madonna song. Ok. But yeah nowhere near as good as the original

This reminds me of an Irish folk band (a genre I'm not particularly fond of). I don't think very much of this song and I don't particularly like the style. I don't know what the famous cover is. The cover I found by searching (Great Big Sea) didn't seem particularly famous either. It also sounded very much the same as the original. If I had known and liked the cover the original wouldn't have interested me too much because it's so similar.

7th - Cat Stephens - First Cut is the Deepest

Not really my sort of song. I just find it a bit boring. Well played, well sung just not interesting or exciting enough. Fails as a power ballad or anthem. Fails as a deep romantic crooning song. It's just a bit too beige.

I think that the No Doubt version is much better and I'm not a huge fan of that even. This song just doesn't do it for me. This song just seems to be building to something that never delivers. The chorus is not powerful, or different enough to make it work and then before you know it you're back to the verse.

"The First Cut Is the Deepest" is a 1967 song written by Cat Stevens, originally released by P. P. Arnold in May 1967. Stevens' own version originally appeared on his album New Masters in December 1967.
I'm not gonna get super picky about the wording of the category rules. It was submitted in good faith and got ranked as such

5th - Wayne Cochran - Last Kiss

I had to look up what this was and who covered it. That's on me though, because it's very obviously famously covered by Pearl Jam (a band whose work I'm not too familiar with). I prefer this version to the cover. It's a bit bland for my tastes, but it's good enough.
edit: It's covered by Elvis too? Haven't listened to that yet, but I imagine his version is better than this.

double edit: Just listened to the start of the "Elvis" version and it's clearly an Elvis impersonator.

As you were

I knew this one was coming. The Amy Winehouse cover is so much better than this in practically every way which hurts this song's ranking. Decent enough song but forgettable and would be completely forgotton now without Winehouse's cover.

I like this version. I think that the soft cell version is a little bit better, but this is good in a completely different way. I like her voice and the peppy backing music. Good quick pace to the song.

Yeah I’m a big Cat Stevens fan

First cut isn’t one of my top 20 of his songs, but it’s still better than Sheryl Crow so is always top of mind for an original less famous but better than cover version.
