Songs from musicals go over pretty well in some karaoke places because a lot of people come from that kind of background. I've seen some songs from musicals absolutely kill. I don't think this is one of them. That said this is one of the few songs with a guy and a girl singing which almost always go over well. I think the end of the song helped it a lot. But ultimately this ended up scoring relatively low.
Tragically Hip are famous for being wildly successful in Canada and not successful at all in the USA. I'm actually always incredibly surprised when an American knows anything about the Hip. New Orleans is Sinking is probably their most well-known song internationally, but practically ****ing every single they've ever had has at least charted in Canada.
They're also an incredible party live and if anyone ever gets the chance to see them, I'd do it.
The 'fairly obscure song by well known artist' is an interesting take for a karoake night. It's risky but could go over well. Anyone who knows this song would definitely join in at a lot of parts and this band makes for some great sing-a-longs that is for sure. I think this is a pretty solid pick but may be missing out on some of the ubiquity needed for a true hit.
I actually like the slower paced songs by this band (lol) and think this may put me in the minority. But this isn't just a straight up rating of the song I have to keep the karaoke in mind. So, keeping that in mind… I still don't think this would make a great karaoke song because it's kind of a wall of words and the lyrics aren't well known enough that people would want to sing along. I also think you would definitely lose people during the bridge.
If the crowd was younger I could see this song going over pretty well. I like the chorus and think it could invite some interaction. This song does involve a certain degree of vocal quality too which helps. For the purposes of this category I think this fits the 'not obvious' part but I think in terms of karaoke in general it might just be a little too obscure if the crowd isnt right, and when you go pop you may as well just go full on ubiquitous.
This song would probably be pretty hard to sing, even though its fairly monotone it's kind of fast paced and if you're drunk enough to be singing karaoke it might be hard not to flub some words. That said it’s a nice enough song. The chorus could lend itself to some singing along by the crowd if they are familiar with the song.
I think this loses a fair amount of points for being fairly 'obvious', mostly because I think this was like one of the most popular rap songs of the past 15 years. I've heard this song played at white people weddings. It'd be fun as hell to do for karaoke and people would know it so you'd get a fair amount of interaction but yeah. Obvi.
