You should always pick random character. I've never cared much for people who don't. What you should do is find 3 other people to play with, and just play multiplayer. As for single player, eh explore around with the options and try to unlock stuff. But the best part of the game by far is multiplayer.

Yes, find friends. And don't listen to chuck, don't always pick random character, because jeez, there are like 30+ chars or something ridic, and personally, I think it's better to learn one or two favorites early, and spread out from there.

Event Matches are good, Subspace Emissary is solid (jeez, coop is so much better than single player). I always found Target Test + Board the Platforms enjoyable for single-player, but yeah, the heart of the game is the multi.
