always like trippy videos the trippier the better. I know BJ sucks but always thought that was one of his best vids.
I thought I remembered as a kid hearing that the part where he is sitting in front of the monitor was some sort of homage to Poltergeist but I may be completely wrong as that was 35 years ago

i watched poltergeist like a million times on the movie channel. I dunno which was first.

I wouldn't doubt the stealing. I just thought you were meaning there were clips from the film in it when it was original. It's one of the alltime most videoy videos for me

Best 90's Videos

This one was not as hard as the 80's. There was a clear winner in this category. The songs were all over the place but the videos were (unsurprisingly) much higher quality than the 80's in terms of the cinematography, story lines, etc.

I also feel like the mid to late 90's were a bit of a dead period for me in terms of video consumption. I was out working, dating my now wife, playing a lot of golf, etc. and just generally had a lot less time to watch videos than I did in the 80's. So a few were actually new to me.

So here we go...

Woo-hoo.

I'm just hoping to stay out of the bottom 2.

This entry surprised me. I have heard the song before but never seen the video before I don't think. The video is quite well done and certainly tells the story of the song. There are some cool effects in the video and it plays like a mini-movie.

The song is fine at first and then it just keeps going and going and going. I think I counted four separate guitar solos mixed in there.

I actually like this band. It is outside my general wheelhouse but their hit record is one of the best of the 80's. I think they are universally loved across fans of differing musical genres. Their issues, from my perspective, are mostly self inflicted wounds. They just couldn't keep it together..whether it was interpersonal issues, drugs, women, etc. they became a bit of a caricature of their former selves. And that manifested itself with some long rambling, bloated songs with guitar and drum solos. I don't know, at the exact time Nirvana and Pixies were trying to strip away all that bombastic **** they seemed to embrace it more. To me this song embodies that.

With an edit button I think there is a VERY good song in there.

A good song...the artist here is known for depressing lyrics and moody music. I don't find his music that somber but most others do. Well THIS song is not going to dissuade anyone from that opinion.

I am familiar with the song, of course, as a superfan. It is nothing if not heavy and moody. The lyrics are a certainly melancholy but with a tinge of optimism. One can be different from the rest of the herd and still find their way in the world. That type of message. But the lyrics combined with the music provide a pretty heavy message. Not my favorite work by this artist and I have probably revisited this not very often.

The video is quite symbolic of the lyrical message. I don't think I have actually seen it before which might be because I'm not a huge fan of the song. Rest of the world passing you by and never really noticing you. That type of thing. It might be MORE somber than the song. Combined it is quite heavy.

Heavily inspired by my favorite early 80's electronic band (OMD) this next entry is from an unlikely successful artist.

This is one of my wife's favorite artists. Thus, I have seen them a few times in concert. i like them well enough but find others in their general musical genre more interesting (Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics, etc). But they have a slew of hits and this might be the biggest.

I like the video. I always like a live performance as a video. I like that it appears to be an old factory which is exactly where I could see this band performing it. But it doesn't blow me away. It's very over the top as one would expect from these two. But when you are watching a video from this band that is pretty much what you expect to see.

This was a ground breaking video at the time. People were blown away by the cinematography and the movements in the video. It still looks pretty cool 20+ years later. The band also is a true one-hit wonder. Not sure I have heard another song by this artist.

The song is also quite interesting. The singer sounds like Stevie Wonder and has good range. I think if you put this on at a party or something people would still recognize it and enjoy. But it doesn't sound as revolutionary or different to me as it did all those years ago.

WE HAVE A DUPE ENTRY! Fortunately for the submitters I can overlook it in this case as this is one of the best songs of the 90's. It also happens to come off one of the best records of the 90's IMO. Like most Brit-Pop artists the band comes with controversy. They just couldn't keep it together and ended up breaking up not long after the 1997 masterpiece Urban Hymns.

The video is the prefect complement to the song. Nothing fancy just a guy walking through town like he owns the joint. But I think the pacing synchs up with the song really well. I remember watching this video a lot back then.

But it really is about the song. I've definitely heard this song more than any other submission and yet I never tire of it. It is big and anthemic and yet still sounds fresh over 20 years later. Great great song and great submission.

Song Ranking: 1.5 (first two spots since it was a dupe)
Video Ranking: 2.5 (2nd and 3rd spots)

5.5 Points Plus .5 Points each= 6 Points

Since it was a dupe they don't get the full 6+1 that would normally be awarded to the top of the podium.

Wow. I'm surprised. I did not expect to share top spot at this point.

The next category, though, is even more subjective, in a sense. For my entry, a lot of people will really love or hate the song, so the video won't change much. For me, it made a big difference.

I DID think of Jamaroquai too...and Marcy Playground...

But once I thought of Verve I never looked back as that one excited me the most. It's such a beautiful song. It was in my psyche. It fit in so well .

I remember the song....and then I remember it popping up everywhere thanks to the greedy rolling stones suing verve and winning 100% of the publishing rites. It was a fricking Nike shoe commercial

But the place I REALLY loved it...it was the bumper music for the PBS show Manor House...which was a reality show of modern people living in an eduardian manor.

I REALLY got into the video in the 00's

It was just periphery journey at first....and as I started paying attention to it, it got deeper and deeper. It brought tears to my eyes almost, very philosophical.

There he is singing about change...singing about life and its tragedy and how he's going to change....buttttttt I"m here in my mode....and in his mode he can't see all the pain he's causing around him....and he never stops...he never learns....

A dstructive wasteland behind him.

He and his buddies...unable to change...unwanting to change...

That message is as haunting today as it was then...

Great song. Couldn't find an official video for these but my favorite Nirvana song is probably Breed or maybe Territorial Pissings (probably not surprising as these songs are where they sound most "punk")

I'm not as big of a fanboy as a lot of others but man they came along at the right time. They basically took Pixies and pushed it forward. (BTW Pixies>>Nirvana in my book)

Category 4-Videos that made you like the song more

The intent here was for videos that increased your enjoyment of the underlying song. I weighed both equally in the rating.

The thought was that the video would inform the viewer about the song or in some what enhance the whole experience. I was pretty flexible on the requirements for the submissions. It could be that the video hammers home the meaning of the song in some way or simply supports the song.

Anyway, the entries were a bit meh here. But off we go to the reveals.
