In. Coming last. Helps if I read the whole thread rather than just the categories, know pretty much instantly what I'm going to submit, then see the words "don't send hard rock/metal" after I've clicked send. ****.

Ah well, it'll be fun to see bwslim's replies either way and hopefully you lot will like my submissions particularly for cats 4 and 5.

In. I surprised myself with how much I liked #5. Otherwise, I put in some heavy hitters for 80's, maybe 90's. Probably no surprises in first 4. #4 might be a miss, but oh well. It is a tremendous category fit, though (for me, anyway).

Thanks but nah, first song is a complete miss but meh. Second and third I think are the best category fit for me (ie I think they are the best video for the eras), and 4 & 5 would be submitted either way. Gonna go with the "don't worry about pandering bit" instead

Plus have to keep the #walrusintegrity obv.

Less important than the other 3. I haven't worked out the exact scoring yet. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 the videos will probably be 50% or so of the score. Number 1 it will be some part of the score but less than 50%. Going for nostalgia there obv.

The last one I am guessing the video will have the least importance.

Gad jumped in as well so we have a total of 6 entries...This will be a bit of a slow reveal but should be able to complete in a day or two since not a lot of entries. No podium or nodium so I'll just roll out the rankings. Points will be 1-6 with a bonus point for coming in first (so really 1-5, 7)

Category #1-Heavy Airplay Videos from 1981/1982

I gave the submitter a chance to amend his entry but he is a man of principle. This video was a frequent play in those the early years...and it is when I would take a bathroom break.

Spoiler:

Idk just not my cup of tea. I will say that the message of the song was completely lost on me as a young teen and obviously has a deeper meaning than I realized. But this song/video was DOA.

From here on out the entries were really good and brought back a lot of memories for sure. It was hard to rank these tbh and all were pretty close. The #1 song was clear cut, however. Anyway here we go:

Certainly a popular song and was widely played on MTV. I never thought it was a particularly great song or video though. I know this band is looked back upon as a more influential one than perhaps I realized. But it's a good song and certainly brings back some memories

The next two were really close and I went back and forth on their order. Both videos were ubiquitous at the time but one was more of a favorite of mine.

This band certainly was a mainstay of early era MTV. They wrapped humor and fun in their videos while putting out cutting edge new music. I never gravitated towards them, however. Not sure why. I have a few friends that love them and still listen to them to this day. I thought they were weird and just never embraced them. Like them on a surface level but never was able to dig too deep.

Nevertheless, this is I'd guess their biggest hit and their most recognizable video. I vaguely remember a friend dressing up as the band for Halloween and wearing those silly hats. Good submission.

This video is straight up early MTV 80's cheese. Terrible clothes, cheesy lighting, not really sure what to do on camera, odd close ups for no particular reason...Yes to all. The song certainly sounds 80's. But it was on all of the time.

Spoiler:

Couple of questions:

1) Why was it Scandal featuring Patty Smyth? Was it because people would think it was Patti Smith and give it a shot? She wasn't a household name best I can tell.
2) She was hot. Very hot in 1981/82.
3) This is a song where the video probably increased their airplay as bad as the video is in hindsight.

Good song..very 80's vibe video. Good entry for a guy that I doubt had never heard this song before.

The cream of the crop these next two entries. Loved this video and song so much. Still do. My friends and I would break down the video about what was going on here. This band probably more than any used the video platform to increase their visibility. I know I purchased their record as a direct result of this song/video. It was HUGE.

Interestingly, they were a decidedly darker band earlier in their career and even some of the other songs on the record. But great entry. Was one of the first videos that I remember that tried to tell a story independent from the song.

So my favorite Human League song is on that 1981 record Dare. If you listened to it with no idea I think this could easily be confused with an early New Order song with the heavy darker mood. Although they became more pop oriented their early work was pretty cutting edge and foresaw the heavy, moody synth based music that would come later in the decade. Cool video here too.

This was the clear winner. I love this song almost as much as any from the 80's. In the states this artist is a bit of an afterthought but he released some great music (even to this day). Different than most of the music at the time it still relies on that simple synth drum beat behind it all.

The video was simple yet supported the song perfectly. It was a big hit both on MTV and in the pop music world more generally. I've actually seen the artist live several times and just think he is a great and varied artist. This is certainly his most recognizable song. Great submission.
