Picture this: a bunch of pre and early teen tools riding their bikes home from swim team practice in early August 1981 to watch this new cable channel everyone was talking about. There were girls with us, sure, but as stated above we were tools so they couldn't have been less interested in us.
But damn there it was: MTV. Suddenly music was a whole package including visual. We loved it and watched every day. My parents thought our brains were going to rot out watching all these videos. There were no dumb reality shows just music video after music video. The music of the next 5-10 years pretty much defined my musical preference (Depeche, The Cure, The Smiths, Echo, Husker Du, Kate Bush, on and on and on).
For this Walrus I want to see music videos in the following categories:
1) Songs from 1981 or 1982 (preferably songs in which the video was in heavy rotation in those years on MTV). For whatever reason when I think of those years I think of this:
(Please don't submit "Video Killed The Radio Star")
2) Best Video from the 80's. I'm looking for a video and song that works together so both need to be solid. My vote that you shouldn't submit:
3) Best Video from the 90's. I'm looking for a video and song that works together so both need to be solid. My vote that you shouldn't submit (Arguably the best video of all time IMO):
4) Video that makes you like the song more. This can be anything from any era. For example, this Mumford video clearly articulated the meaning of the song to me and because I am an old sappy fool it made me love the song that much more.
I'll be fairly flexible here but make sure the song somehow reinforces the song or clarifies it's message or whatever. iFor this category only: It doesn't have to be the OFFICIAL ARTIST VIDEO
5) Post 2000 song that sounds heavily influenced by 80's music. I don't care about the genre or the artist just that it could have been an 80's song or was heavily influenced by 80's music.
I always thought this song could have been the ending of a John Hughes movie or something:
So that's it.
Scoring: I will judge based on the song AND the video
Due Date: Submissions due by August 1
Musical Preference: I prefer punk, post punk, indie, new wave, some hip hop, etc. to heavier stuff. But submit whatever you want outside of country. I'll probably be hard to please if you submit something like metal or hard rock tho.
I will probably reveal fairly quickly. Don't worry about pandering as much in this Walrus as a lot of the videos and songs I love will be obvious submissions. But if you can provide something off the beaten path that can only help!
