LOL. My gf's 2 y.o. nephew calls HHH "the dinosaur game". He loves pounding on it.

+1 to Settlers and Puerto Rico. Other games that are fun that I haven't seen mentioned ITT:

- Vinci (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/60/vinci)
This is a risk-like game. No dice. Euro-domination by acquiring territory and skills for your civilization.

- Wiz War
This is a game played on a board representing a dungeon. You win by defeating all of your opponents in battle OR by stealing enough treasure from their home base and returning it to yours. Card-based game that gives wizards different skills/powers -- including the power to rotate pieces of the board, introduce road-blocks, etc. in the labyrinth-like board.

- BS Dice
Easy game, not a board game, definitely can be combined w drinking. Everyone gets 6 dice and a cup. 6's wild. Players roll their dice and keep them hidden under the cup. Then, in turn, they make increasing claims of what might be in their dice: "I have one 4" "I have one 5" "I have two 3's" "I have three 1's" ... until someone calls BS. When someone calls BS, it's a showdown; the losing player loses one die. Winner is last man standing.

But I am a card game guy in general, so I'm not as well-versed in board games.

It's pretty awesome. There's three different versions I think. One of them sucks compared to the others, I think the good ones are the original and the Avalon Hill one

this one was "reimplemented" by one of last year's hits, Small World. same gameplay (basically) with a light/comedic fantasy theme.

just to come back on this, my dad says it's got a pretty hardcore followership, although he doesn't like it. It looks like you can play online:

Not sure if it's been mentioned here yet but a family member brought home Monopoly Deal over Christmas and we had a bunch of fun with it.

Pretty much a card game form of the board game with a few added action card twists, you get money, properties and action cards and win by accumulating three sets of monopolies.

In the vein of MD, are there any other card-only games? Reason I ask is they're very convenient to take on road trips/trains/buses/planes. Am grunching so will read through the thread from the start but the only other ones I'm familiar with are Bohnanza (which is exactly the kind of card-only game I'm looking for) and Dominion (too big to travel with).

Haven't played it, but I know that Ticket to Ride has a card only variant. Other games also have card-only variants. Including Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico (whose card game is called San Juan).

I tried it out when I was little.

Its not good for lazy people. Or people who don't have money to throw down the drain.

Yeah I used to play Warhammer 40k, Epic 40k, Fantasy and Necromunda
It's quite the time+money sink but I think I'll eventually get a Necromunda meet going again. It's pretty good for the lazy+cheapo but I think it's not sold anymore..****;dr version:

You get a gang of maybe 6-10 miniatures (so not too much painting+buying stuff) and play different scenarios vs other gangs and level up your guys, buy new equipment and stuff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromunda

You can pretty much run it like an RPG group and have a gaming day once a week or something and have someone be in charge of supervising the campaign. Kind of fun to come up with your own scenarios, best one we played was a night of the living dead remake with some random zombie miniatures that would just respawn all over the place etc

it's an awesome game but it requires a ton of time and money

you basically have to dedicate 3 hobbies to playing it:
collecting models
painting them
the game itself

I got the iphone version of carcassonne not too long ago. Never played it before that, but really like it a lot. Recently bought the basic set to play with my daughter, she seems to like it once she got used to the rules.

Anyone else have the iphone version that wants to play sometime?

I was averaging about 2-3 minutes on the 4x4 but I don't like the even cubes due to parity issues.

The big cubes are fun but I like the regular cube best because a speedsolve fits a normal person's attention span. No one wants to watch someone solve a 7x7 even if they can do it in 5 minutes.

the bigger cubes aren't harder to solve, they just take longer

if you can solve a 3x3, you can solve any of them

my best time with the 3x3 was 2.5 minutes fml.
