Dominion is considered a board game for this thread; it’s the first game I mentioned in post 3

If you like Dominion, try Clank, which combines the deck building with a board and some push your luck trying to steal treasures and make it back out in time

Orleans is a fun “bag builder” board game that has similarities to deck builders in that you make your own luck with what you draw, but you don’t have to use entire deck before shuffling as every worker used goes back in the bag before the next draw

Another deck builder is Star Realms, which many like better than Dominion and it plays well 2 player

Finally, check out Thunderstone or Thunderstone Quest as a dominion-like game that adds in fighting monsters in a dungeon instead of just buying victory points and also allows for upgrading cards to the next level version

Isotropic was amazing. I still paid money to unlock all the current sets at the time for the new version. But now they changed it to a subscription model where they want you to pay per month, and I lost all the sets I bought.

I still love dominion

but **** the online version so much

How is that legal?
Tabletop Simulater is probably thing I have purchased in my life. 20 bucks for almost any game out there.

Yea, I am wondering too how this is legal.

Dominion is pretty fun live, but can get old heads up.
If you like dominion but want something a bit quicker and more fun for a “casual” type crowd, SmashUp is pretty fun.

I’m down to play any medium to heavy game on tabletop simulator or tabletopia most evenings

Hmm, I think SmashUp is neither quicker nor easier nor more fun

I own SmashUp. Tried to play it once and I felt like we had to keep referring to online guides every minute or so. So many things in that game just feel poorly explained as it comes, with cards that buff all the other cards and such. Just gets very confusing.

A decent game that I played once with friends is called Bohnanza.

Bohnanza, or "Beans" as we like to refer to it, is good casual fun but devolves into a lot of negotiation and trading, kind of like trading resources in Settlers. Not the biggest fan of that. It's also Uwe's early game.

I've seen a few people mention Avalon in this thread. I'm trying to run a forum version, please sign up if interested!

Anyone have any strong opinions (positive or negative) on Scythe, Gaia Project or Great Western Trail?

Going to be signing up for convention slots and, assuming they don't fill up lightning fast and I get locked out, I'll be able to sign up for any two of those three. I've never played any of them.

i own all three and have played each multiple times

GWT is a lot of fun and easy to learn. It has quite a limited shelf life as the winning strategy should become clear fairly quickly.

Scythe is an interesting combination of worker placement and war game, though I'd call it a cold war game as much of the tension over conflict is created by the threat of engagement. The game is not hard to learn and solid strategies should be clear after a couple plays. The recent expansion, Rise of Fenris, is adds an 8-game campaigns to the equation. Highly recommend.

Gaia Project is incredibly complex in all the good ways. If you clearly understand Terra Mystica, you will transition smoothly to GP. If not, you may find engine building a bit clunky at first. It is a game well worth the effort to understand and play.

All 3 are great

And if it’s a normal convention with open play then all 3 should hit the table a lot to play with random people so you should be able to get all 3 in if you have time

If you like Terra Mystica, Gaia Project is a better version of it

Scythe has some cool mechanics and is more about threat of battle than actual battle

GWT is great and probably the most likely for a wide variety of people to like on their first play

I’d choose GWT and then whichever of Scythe and Gaia sounds best to you

If you haven’t played Terra Mystica, then probably GWT and Scythe

Gaia you’ll want to play multiple times; can be unforgiving if you make wrong moves early on against experienced players

Ended up signing up for Great Western Trail and Scythe. Also signed up for Five Tribes (not terribly excited about it, but the games offered that time were very meh), Food Chain Magnate (very excited to try this) and two games that the host is going to bring back from Essen the week before.

Can't complain about the games I got (I signed up for the last Scythe spot 5 minutes into the registration period).

Looking forward to it. Will be sure to report back after the event.
