I left the movie thinking about Buffalo Bill.

Been a few years since I saw Heat; may start it tonight; if not then tomorrow

Will try to watch all the heist movies I haven’t seen in the past year or two

For my next pick, I'll be going to the world of Fantasy.

This is a movie that doesn't fit your typical definition of fantasy - no elves, no swords, and the stakes aren't the fate of the world, but of one person. This is a movie that is excellently written, directed and acted, and received four Oscar nominations.

The Green Mile

He knows that you’re thinking, and will address it in his write-up.

opening scene: lord of war

Choreogrephy, banging tune, political mesage AND an incredible introduction to the movie itself

Brilliant

When I first looked at the categories, my mind immediately went to this scene. Yeah, there are other great opening scenes in other movies, but I had to think for a while to come up with some good ones. But "Great Opening Scenes" and Raiders of the Lost Ark are intertwined. This scene immediately tells you everything you need to know about Indiana Jones, sets the tone for the whole movie, and grabs the audience by the hands and pulls everyone in for a great ride. This scene has an ancient treasure, it features Indy's whip, it shows him failing, succeeding, overcoming adversity, and coming up just short, which sets the stage for the entire movie. And as a bonus, we've got Alfred Molina as an awesome heel.

I'm at work... the write-up will come later.

When Harry Met Sally came out in 1989. This film redefined the direction of romantic comedies for the next 20+ years. The chemistry of the two lead characters is...

hilarious

frustrating

and beautiful.

Watching this movie absolutely convinces you that this couple is destined to fall in love, and we have no problem believing that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are a perfect pair. They come across as real, flawed people, who are more than the sum of their parts whenever they're together.

Spoiler:
And they pay homage to Rick and Ilsa.

I'm picking the screenplay runner up as Hell or High Water

This has potential for another categories but I'm picking it here.

This movie is incredible. It's got everything you want from a western and everything you want from a movie set in the modern day. Great story, acting, scenery as well as runner up worthy screen play.

The scene with the car chase and machine gun is excellent.

"What don't you want?"

The film has action, drama, tension and humour.

See it now if you haven't already

I choose 1999 for best year in film

The Matrix, Fight Club, Magnolia, Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, The 6th Sense, Election, The Insider, The Talented Mr Ripley, American Pie, Toy Story 2, Office Space, Being John Malkovich, The Green Mile, Man on the Moon, The Iron Giant, American Beauty, Boys Don't Cry, Cider House Rules, Varsity Blues, Payback, Analyze This, Eyes Wide Shut, Cruel Intentions, Entrapment, The Mummy, Tea with Mussolini, Notting Hill, The Thirteenth Floor, Buena Vista Social Club, Run Lola Run, Tarzan, Pirates of Silicon Valley, Blair Witch Project, Outside Providence, Three Kings, Princess Mononoke, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Any Given Sunday, Galaxy Quest

there's so many more as well - just a goat year for film that's packed full of classics still widely viewed today from big picture everyone loves stuff like fight club to genre specific stuff which is among the best in it's category like 13th floor, mononoke, bigalow, galaxy, silicon valley, lola, buena vista, american pie etc etc

Also, while not exactly a masterpiece , this was the year the Phantom Menace came out, which had such stupendous success that you could argue this was the moment in time when studios would begin focusing on big cinematic universe projects

while i think most of those cinematic universe films suck balls, you can't ignore the influece the success of episode 1 had in shaping the future of hollywood for the worse - thus ensuring we wouldn't ever get another year as good as 1999 again
