I will take the double helix structure of DNA for scientific discoveries.

The discovery, which kicked off the whole field of molecular biology to begin, and with it the benefits the biotechnology brings. Its fair to say, if potentially a bit over the top, that this discovery unlocked the secrets of life.

Pick - Olympic Men's 100m Final



As a number of people have already said if you're into the nuances and skill of the sport then watch it on TV. You've got a better view, commentary, replays, different angles. The reason to attend a sporting event is for the spectacle and the atmosphere.

Peak Athletic Performance
The Men's 100m Olympic final is special. It only happens once every 4 years and it's the most important title by far (I mean for 100m runners, but it's probably right up there as the most important Olympic title). Everything is building up to it. Everyone involved is making sure they're in peak physical condition for it. Everyone is giving it 100%. This sport has the complexity dial turned down low and every little edge you could possibly take dialed up to the max. Fingertips up to the starting line. Go on the B of Bang. Hold your breath for the entire race. Perfect striding planned out so that you don't finish on a half stride. Duck your head to go over the line a fraction of a second faster.

Exclusivity
This is a pretty exclusive event because of a number of factors. It only happens once every 4 years. There are a much smaller number of tickets available compared to other sports. The cost is high (It depends on the location but more than $1000 for a good ticket is fairly standard). This will definitely be a good dinner party story to tell for years to come.

Atmosphere
There is a buzz around a city when the Olympics is on. If a country hosts the FIFA World Cup there is a bit of prep but the infrastructure is already there. The World Cup is in it's own little bubble and it's possible to live life outside of the bubble. The Olympics takes over a city and a country for a number of years. Olympic bids. Building new stadiums and Olympic villages for the athletes. Planning opening ceremonies. People who aren't interested in sport get sucked in too. You watch athletes do sports that you barely know the rules to but within 20 minutes you've got the hang of it and you're telling him what he should have done. You patriotically cheer on people you've never heard of just because of the flag next to their name. It infiltrates all the news stories and current events entertainment shows. It's unavoidable and it's all building up to one thing. The creme de la creme of the Olympic calendar: The Men's 100m Sprint Final.

Category - City to live in between the ages of 25 and 35
Pick - Barcelona

Barcelona has got everything you could possibly want when you're young. As far as big cities go it's relatively affordable. Spain is part of the Euro zone and seems to be great at taking more subsidies from the EU than the tariffs it pays.

It's got the weather and the beach



It's got the food



It's got the nightlife



Pretty much every band that does a European tour has Barcelona on the list



It's got high level sport



It's got art and culture:




Gaudi has a lot of his work outside of Park Guell too. This is just an apartment block on the street



It's got huge green areas and parks if you want to chill out and not feel like you're in the middle of a big city. Just take the afternoon off and have a picnic and take a book.



It's got chill street life too if you're tired at the high pace of life



Oh and it's also got siestas built into daily part of life to help you burn the candle at both ends.

Barcelona is an elite choice. I've only visited, but had the most amazing cultured, relaxed and exciting time all at once. All of europe is obviously a transport hub because you can jump between so many cultures so fast, but Barcelona has such proximity to Africa, Italy, the Med and Northern Europe. Great shout.


Less sure on men's 100.....its over in 10s. Although the Olympics are one in a million. London 2012 brought the most insane buzz to the city

The fact that it's over so quickly adds to the atmosphere and exclusivity. There's no lulls in the event, just hype and action. Exclusivity goes through the roof when you consider cost per minute of action...
