GOAT pick and I’m just disappointed I didn’t think of it first. I am doing a bit of assuming here that the movies didn’t lie to me, but it’s not just the numbers that he saved, it’s the way he did it. The self-sacrifice and risk he went through to save as many people as he could. He was a good egg.

2). xander biscuits – Desmond Doss

I’m aware that I’m totally biased here, but whatever. I’m picking him for the reasons stated in thread. This is very close to pick #3 and I don’t know what order I’d rank #2 and #3 if I was impartial. But I’m not impartial and so Desmond Doss is 2nd.

3). D1iab – Wiltoid Pilecki

Another war time hero. Lots of personal risk and self-sacrifice for the greater good. I’m giving Desmond the edge though for reasons mentioned in the thread. He volunteered for something bad but also fairly unknown to gather intelligence. He dealt with it excellently while he was there but he kinda had to. Very brave nonetheless and a worthy recipient of position #3

4). eyebooger - Stanislav Petrov

This guy was clever and brave and saved the world from nuclear war. All this stuff is true but I put him in a slightly different category to the guys ranked above him. He didn’t have the immediate personal physical risk. I know that capital punishment was still around in Russia then, but I doubt it was on his mind as he did what he did. He risked court martial and disgrace and perhaps jail time but that’s not the same as being in a situation where you are killed on the spot if you’re caught doing what you’re doing. Great man and I’m thankful that he did the right thing.

5). irtm - Nelson Mandella
6). rtspurs – Mahatma Ghandi

I put these political guys in a different category of hero again. We’re looking at the results of what they achieved and hardships they endured over a long period of time and calling them heroes. This long period of time shouldn’t matter but it does. It’s rational decision after rational decision made which all follow on from each other and gradually lead them into trouble/victory of their goals. But It’s not the same as having a choice of going forwards into danger on a battle field or turning back to safety. There is something primal and something brave and heroic to be able to do that.

7). e_holle – Tank Man

I’m afraid this is what gets him such a low ranking:

Quote:
At least one witness has stated that "Tank Man" was not the only person who had opposed the tanks during the protest. Shao Jiang, who was a student leader, said: "I witnessed a lot of the people standing up, blocking the tanks." Tank Man is unique in that he is the only one who was photographed and recorded on video.
What he did was brave, but he could be a protestor just swept up in the moment and just did what everyone else was doing to. A hero is that one person who goes above and beyond.

8). Bloobird – Edward Jenner

Scientist doing his job. No risk if he fails. Not a hero

4. Tank Man - super brave to stand up to a tank
5. Mandela - tough to judge this against others. I think I like him here.
6. Doss - his act was heroic, but didn't really change the world
7. Gandhi - another difficult one to judge
8. Jenner - great for humanity, but I'm not convinced of heroism

3. D1iab - Tennis

it's actually a sport, and I kinda enjoy playing it, and I at least appreciate the skill involved at the highest level even if I find it a bit like watching paint dry

4. xander - Poker

it's NOT a sport, but I enjoy playing it and would rather watch it on TV than any of the things ranked lower, so I guess it manages to sneak a thoroughly undeserved 4th

5. eyebooger - Beach Volleyball

I guess at least there's some eye candy, and it doesn't totally suck to watch.

6. rtspurs - Boxing

just one of those things that I've always felt was a lot better in theory than in practise, I've found every boxing match I've actually watched to generally be tedious with the odd moment of excitement. Maybe this is my fault for not knowing anything about the sport? naaaah

7. IRTM - Baseball

baseball is just so goddamn boring and it lasts a million years

8. filthyvermin - Rhythmic Gymnastics

is even more goddamn boring, scored utterly impenetrably, and pre-pubescent girls in lycra aren't my thing

Rugby Union and Ice Hockey weren't drafted, and would easily have podiumed.

Also, baseball boring? Someone didn't watch the thrilling 13 minute at bat today.

1). xander biscuits – Poker

Call me biased, but hey, that’s why I drafted poker. It’s the only thing close to a sport that I watch regularly and have a keen interest in.

2). e_holle – Football (not soccer)

Like I previously said, I quite enjoy the World Cup. Not so much for the game play itself but for the world wide spectacle and the competition format. I like hearing the stories about the team that needed to win their game by 3 goals to get out of the group stage and they did it. I like the upsets and controversies and all that. Plus I know it’s over in a matter of weeks and not months like the regular league is.

3). D1iab – Tennis

I used to watch Wimbledon as a kid and quite enjoyed it until Tim Henman eventually got knocked out. Now Andy Murray wins and I still couldn’t care less but I’ll put it at number 3 for nostalgia reasons.

4). irtm – Baseball

I’ve never seen a full game of baseball but I imagine I’d like it more than a lot of other sports because of the level of stats involved. Also it’s a fairly slow game with lots of replays and analysis and posturing which might be kinda interesting. Maybe.

5). CrimsonFox – American Football

I’ve no interest in this sport but I do kinda enjoy the hype of the superbowl even if I never watch it. The idea of going to a game seems like it would be a worthwhile experience because of the BBQ in the parking lot before hand and all the uber supportive fans with face paints and the like.

6). rtspurs – Boxing
7). eyebooger – Beach Volleyball
8). filthyvermin – Rhythmic Gymnastics

We’re at the point where we see how long I could endure a sport rather than enjoy it. The longer I could endure your sport the better it gets ranked. I have no interest in boxing or betting on a 2 horse race. It’s just snooze town with brain damage.

I guess eyebooger was going for the triple of: fun to watch, fun to play and sexy girls. To that I would respond by saying perhaps for 6 minutes during the Olympics every 4 years, nah not interested in playing this and you sir are a pervert!

I would perhaps watch 1 routine of rhythmic gymnastics once every 4 years and be bored by the end of it. I think a routine is 2 minutes long.

Jurassic Park – This is definitely a good movie and was pretty groundbreaking at the time. Plus, seeing this on the big screen as a young kid is a cinematic experience that will likely never be topped. Unfortunately, in a category with so many standout picks, this gets relegated to last place.

7.
Spoiler:
The Big Lebowski – I almost feel bad ranking this so low because it is probably the only pick filthy made that was praised as a great pick, but it is what it is. The Coen brothers are pretty hit and miss for me, and while this is by no means a miss, I just don’t have the same fondness for it that so many others do. If you had taken Fargo instead, it would be a different story.

6.
Spoiler:
Groundhog Day – If the category was romantic comedies, this movie would score off the charts. Very funny and wholly original, with a great lead performance from Murray, this probably deserves a higher position. But sixth will have to suffice.

5.
Spoiler:
The Shawshank Redemption – I’m a sucker for prison escape movies, and this is no doubt a great one, if not a tad overrated. It’s also is one of those movies that whenever it’s on TV, I always end up watching it to the end. This will probably score much better among the other judges, but I can’t put it higher than fifth.

4.
Spoiler:
The Silence of the Lambs – One of only 3 movies to sweep the top 5 categories at the Oscars, and it deserved every one of them. Hopkins is so electrifying as Hannibal, that you forget he’s not even the main villain of the movie! Easily one of the greatest thrillers of all time.

3.
Spoiler:
Se7en – Another serial killer movie! I had a hard time splitting these 2, but in the end I gave the slight edge to Se7en. I just love Fincher’s style. You can always tell when you’re watching one of his movies, and he’s one of the best in the biz. Plus, who hasn’t said, “What’s in the box?!” when a mystery package arrives?

2.
Spoiler:
Pulp Fiction – Back when Tarantino was the coolest thing to happen to movies in a long time, and before he became a parody of himself, he gave us this totally original and fun movie. Tarantino’s style has been mimicked (poorly) so many times since, that it almost feels like a cliché now. But imitation is highest form of flattery, as they say.

1.
Spoiler:
Goodfellas – When you already have movies like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull on your CV, the only way you can go from there is down, right? Wrong! This is Scorsese’s greatest achievement. Everything about this movie is so perfectly executed that it would be wrong to put it anywhere but at the top. A masterpiece.

Spoiler:
You guys did pretty well in this category, and I’m not sure if Goodfellas could be dethroned, but if you picked Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I might’ve had to give it to you. Other honourable mentions that would have scored very highly would’ve been Trainspotting, Leaving Las Vegas, Heat and Fight Club.

COMEDIANS

From xander:

I’m considering their comedy only for this. I don’t care about their personal life for the purposes of this draft.

1). D1iab – Louis C.K.

He is consistently funny which is what I look for in a comedian. He will talk about anything and everything and he is always funny.

2). filthy – Dave Chapelle

Dave Chapelle is also hilarious in pretty much everything I’ve seen him in. If this was “funny man” and not just “stand up comedy” then he’d rival Louis C.K. for the #1 spot. The Chapelle show and Half Baked are both great and I especially love the Rick James stuff. His stand up is also very good and that’s what I’m judging him on here and that’s why he’s in such a high position.

3). rtspurs – Bill Burr

Bill Burr is very funny but in a way that can blend in with a lot of modern comedians. You can imagine him doing a lot of other comedians stuff well and vice versa. He doesn’t have a really strong personal identity and therefore I lump him together with Todd Glass, Hannibal Buress, Todd Barry and a little bit of Jim Norton even. Don’t get me wrong though, Bill Burr is great and 3rd place is a good place to get.

4). Jerry Seinfeld – CrimsonFox

This might rustle a few jimmies but I don’t care. I like Jerry Seinfeld stand up. It’s soothing and wholesome and still funny. Of comedians who don’t do crude material and who you could show to your grandma I would say that he is the best. Brave pick that has been rewarded

5). eyebooger – George Carlin

This is the point where I stop loving the comedians and start thinking they’re just ok. I think George Carlin is just ok. He might have done stuff first or in a time when it was really edgy to do his sort of material but I’m not from that time. I have seen his stuff at the same time or after a bunch of modern comedians and it’s pretty funny but it doesn’t stand out as amazing. I think he might be a victim of people telling me how great he is and raising my expectations. Also he relies a little too much on quick fire lists of things which I think is a little bit of a cheap way to get laughs because of the whole momentum thing. He’s at least done it a couple of times anyways. In conclusion, probably one of a kind in his time, but we’re not in his time and so he’s relegated to “just ok”.

6). Bloobird – Richard Pryor

Confession time. I’ve probably seen less Richard Pryor stand up than anyone else on this list. I thought it was ok and didn’t remember laughing too much. He’s probably another victim of over-hype and probably another person of his time that comedy historians will look back to favourably. But if I just watch something now and want to laugh then I would not be picking Richard Pryor. Love his film work with Gene Wilder though. See No Evil, Hear No Evil is the best.

7). IRTM – Steve Martin

I don’t rate him as a stand up. Love a lot of his film and sketch work, but not really as a stand up. It’s perhaps more off putting to me that his audiences love him so much. They laugh so hard at everything he says and I’m just left watching him wondering what’s so funny.

8). e_holle – Billy Connolly

I do not like Billy Connolly stand up. I adore the man and will watch every other type of show with him in other than stand up. I love talk shows with him in and the sorts of shows where he drives around on his bike meeting and talking to people, but put the man in front of a microphone and a live audience and I don’t find him funny. He’s really clever and really witty but his stand up is not for me. Sorry.

So, I was really hoping I didn’t get this category because I knew my rankings would be so far from standard that it would almost be considered trolling. I even tried watching a couple more clips from Carlin/Pryor to see if something would eventually click, but nope, they just do nothing for me. The next ones up, I consider to be pretty meh also, and the top 3 or 4 are the only ones that can actually make me laugh on a consistent basis.
