I don't think this is always true, but no I don't expect to be able to take it.

Not a fan of Lost. I think I watched 2 episodes max but I thought of this pilot first.

When I saw this category, my first thought was [redacted] but upon further reflection, I am choosing for Best Movie Year 1994.

Just a quick list of a few of the great movies:

The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
The Lion King
Forrest Gump
The Mask
Dumb and Dumber
Leon The Professional
Ed Wood
Clerks
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Crumb (All-time Great Documentary)

I can list more but you get the idea.

Yeah that’s a top 3 year; my first thought as well

Also I’ve pre-ranked the categories before the drafting for the first 1/3 of my judging points. Any secondary judges I urge you to do the same soon so you aren’t judging based on actual picks for that portion of the score.

Awkward situation:
I want to research movies for the movie category here, but it would almost certainly count as research against the Thunderdome going on right now. (Everyone else should think about this too if you're in the Thunderdome.)
Thoughts?

Was thinking the same thing, and I would definitely need to research for this because I can never remember the dates films came out lol

I think it's enough to just avoid box office mojo and anyplace else that mentions gross numbers. I know that in the last draft (1986 movies) I just did a Google search and easily found a list of films from that year that made no mention of how much money they made.

Yeah, researching for this draft might remind you of films you'd forgotten about, but that's unavoidable.

Even reading this thread might remind you of stuff even if you research neither.

https://www.imdb.com/search/title

Type in a year (or a range of years if you like) and it will churn out all the results in order of popularity (not box office gross).
You also have to change the view to "compact" to avoid the box office gross being displayed.
Even if you want to click on a movie link to look at it in more detail you'd have to scroll way down to find the box office gross.

I don't think this would count as research for the thunderdome.

To further remove the thought of research how about I say that the most recent draftable year is 2008.

Is this an official change to the category?

Yes.

Nothing that modern would have done well with me anyways, so if you were planning to draft a recent year then I've just saved you the trouble.

Everyone ok with this, or do people think that it's still too much like research for the thunderdome? I mean I wouldn't have thought so, because I'm sure that people will browse netflix or walk past their DVD collection or channel hop and get exposed to movie titles.

Are we still judging anything other than our own category?

I don't think so. I think we're relying on outsiders to be secondary judges.

We've got 2 of them already

We used to go to Denny's all the time in college and I had a friend that was bound and determined every time that this was it! This was the time! He scoured the menu here and there....weighed the pros and cons...he was going to order something fresh and different THIS TIME! It was THE TIME! He was going to do it!

And then the waitress would show up....stare at him.....and ask in that intimidating voice..."What can I get you?"

He would stammer and stare at her like a deer caught in headlights about to total a pontiac on a wet road...and after what seems like hours but was really 5 seconds he would panic and say "I'll have the club." Every....single...time

...and why not bacon and turkey and lettuce and tomato and mayo on toast, maybe ham, maybe chicken. But it's the standard by which other sandwiches are measured

1 of the 3 picks so far is #1 in its category.

Yeah, it's fine with me. Just want to be 100% clear. Might have saved me from picking 2015.

For Scottish thing, I'll take Penicillin.

Without it, some of you guys reading this would probably be dead by now. Or not even born for that matter.

I feel the opposite of this. But we should decide one way or another and I'll go along with what Xander decides.

if they aren't submitting things then they shouldn't be having a huge impact then
