There was a lot of hate for it when it was first created too.

there are a fair number of people who are literally afraid of political discussion and I think that is where the hate comes from. It's psychological and deep seated.

The jig was transparent: you started off by trolling the thread with some joke-ish entries...that got 0 traction and was largely ignored. Nothing worse than being ignored, so then you upped your trolling to criticizing the entire enterprise as some affront to females. Monkey Banana, seeing an opening to join in on the trolling and naturally having nothing better to do, escalates it to a five-alarm fire. (Monkey Banana - it must be re-emphasized continually - made dozens of posts calling past winner Anna Kendrick ugly, and chastising people for daring to vote based on personality.)
