Man, this song was really close to finishing a lot higher than it did. There are some other songs that are in the same category as this that are inspirational and make great soundtracks to a highlight video of people being awesome. But this one is kinda thin and the singing annoys me. All of the pieces are there, but the execution falls flat and I can't give it a better ranking than 2nd from the bottom. I really tried to like this, but I couldn't pull it off.

I've got the rankings ready but haven't started the write-ups yet. While I put those together, here's my own submission for an Earth-themed song.

Spoiler:
I borrowed a flash drive from my cousin some time around 2007 & was going through an MP3 collection, blasting my headphones while flying across the country. I'd never heard this band before, much less heard of this band before and I was digging them. And then this song came on, and blew me away right at about the 1:30 time mark. I still remember the jolt I felt and then quickly rewinding the song back to the beginning to give it the attention it fully deserved.

hehe when I saw this I thought for sure this must be as I am the most unapologetic MM fan ITT by a mile. But alas not me

If you're going to submit a classic rock song that I've heard countless times, you'd better nail it or the song will slip in the rankings as a result. This one is a miss. I know the band well and I really like one of their songs a lot.

This isn't that song.

I've heard this song plenty of times but it's always been the type of song that would come on the radio and I'd change the station and the other stations would be playing crappy songs too so I'd come back to this one and wait for the next song. This is a live version which I'd never heard, but that doesn't help.

Yeah, if you'd submitted that song you would have taken 1st place and gotten a high five from me.

As it is, you still may (or may not) have finished in first place with your non-MM song. But no high five.

Meh. I don't like this song either. It's cheesy and obvious and the band probably got sued by Evanescence for plagiarism. And reading some of the YouTube comments by middle-aged women who talk about how this song changed their life makes me like this song even less. This song is formulaic and predictable and unnecessary.

My write-up demands that the reveal come before my thoughts about the song.

xander biscuits submitted 'Dirt' by Phish

When I was in college I was a major pothead and I went to a handful of Grateful Dead shows. The shows were fun enough, but the real appeal was the spectacle outside the concert, people-watching all of the freaks and weirdos. And passing a joint around inside the arena with strangers was also fun. But I never really got into the band or the music.

Now I'm much older and I haven't smoked weed in years, but I still have friends who follow Phish around and travel to other states to see them perform 3 nights in a row, and who will even sit at home and watch a live stream of one of their concerts from their computer. But I'm convinced that nobody actually likes Phish and that it's just the culture and the drugs that appeals to their fans.

That all said, this is one of the better songs of theirs that I've ever heard.

Spoiler:
Yeah, I know that Phish and The Dead aren't the same band, but on the other hand,
Spoiler:
They're totally the same band.

Now we're getting into the good stuff. This song bounced in and out of the podium and landed just short. It's a band I've never heard of and the singer is sassy and her voice reminds me a little bit of Chrissie Hynde, which is a very big compliment. I'm going to go ahead and check out more of her songs and see what this is all about.

Onto the podium!

In 3rd place:

This song went back and forth with the preceding song (which finished 4th). The synthesizers are funky and the vocal effects are very cool, which push this song into the top three. The song does get a little repetitive, but it has enough build to it to keep me engaged from start to finish.

Congratulations to bwslim69 on his submission of 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush.

Spoiler:
When you submit two separate lists and one of them is labeled "alternate" you run the risk of realizing you had two choices and made the wrong one.

This would have been an easy 3rd place finisher. Sorry, xander.

In 2nd place:

The opening really makes me think of Panic! At The Disco, but I looked up the band and apparently there's no connection.

This is an earworm kind of a song for me. I'm pretty sure that I'd never heard it before, but after a week of listens, I feel like I've known about this song for years. Great energy and a phenomenal hook takes this (almost) to the top.

Spoiler:
dizzyqtp proves that he can submit songs I don't hate with this one. Maybe that will work in reverse and I can stay alive in the eliminator???

Here's 'The Bird And The Worm' by The Used.

Which means we have our winner!

I want to make a blanket out of this song and climb inside it and take a joyous nap. And when I wake up I want to turn the blanket into a burrito and enjoy a delicious snack of this song. This song is cozy and makes me smile. It's funny, because the first time I went through the playlist, this came on right after the Phish song, and categorically, they're similar songs. But the execution and the singer's voice, and all of the other things that I can't put my finger on make this a slam dunk of a choice for top pick. There was never really a question that this was going to win it.

Xander probably meant TO ALTERNATE the entry, as in use the 2nd entry songs for the 1st & 3rd categories.

I did forget your age, bolt. I figured the Guess Who would not be that familiar to most. On to the next caregory.

But.... "Running Up That Hill"? Really? Third? I gagged a little when I saw that.

American Woman is the one song that would score well by the Guess Who... except not for the "Earth" category, obviously.

And... "The Bird and the Worm" is a bit of a stretch.

I'll let you know later what's wrong with Ben Folds, after I listen to the song.

Landed is one of my favorite songs of all time. The rest of my submissions are not as awesome although there's one from a no name band that I need someone else's opinion on because they never really made it big.

The rest of the reveals shouldn't be too far away.
