Let's do another reveal. It's fire!

Here's my fire entry. This was my ring tone for a while, so it's an easy choice.

Before we begin with the reveals, I have some corrections from the last 2 rounds.

Spoiler:
Dizzy's submissions for Earth and Air have both been re-ranked to come in last place. This has nothing to do with me being eliminated from his Walrus in yesterday's reveal.

Now we can get back to the fire reveals.

In 9th place:

Fire is definitely the strongest category you guys submitted. I can't say I really dislike any of the songs and the top two are downright awesome. But something had to finish at the bottom and this was it.

This song doesn't do anything for me at all. I mean it's pretty and soulful, but it's awfully boring and at 6 and a half minutes long it drags on. And on. And on. I just couldn't get into it.

Spoiler:
Eric submitted "Song Of The Candle" by Stan Rogers.

In 8th place:

This song reminds me of a song that was on the playlist at the poker room where I work. And did that song ever get old quick. The falsetto singing is really annoying. The beat is unpredictable and different, but in a way that doesn't really please me at all. This song is kind of a mish mash of effects that don't really fit and the song doesn't really go anywhere. And the chorus is bothersome. And repetitive. Which makes it repetitively bothersome.

Spoiler:
Dizzy submitted "Slow Burn" by Crywolf.

We had this epic/inspirational dud in the Earth round. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC6LbwVI81g

And we had this epic/inspirational dud in the Air round. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B90VnG6FR0

So we know that at least I'm consistent. These contrived "epics" with a female lead singing in falsetto just don't rate with me.

Spoiler:
KarmaDope submitted "Burn To A Cinder" by Epica.

I didn't know what to do with this one. I like the song and I like the band, but this is about as predictable an entry as anyone could ever imagine submitting. How many times have I heard this song on classic rock radio? 100? 500? More? This isn't their best song but it's probably their best known song.

When did I stop hearing this song on classic rock radio? When I got a car with a cd player.

Spoiler:
Viggorous submitted "Light My Fire" by The Doors.

In 5th place:

See the 6th place write-up. It's more of the same, but it's a slightly lesser known band and it's their 2nd or 3rd best-known song. So it finishes one spot higher.

Spoiler:
xander biscuits submitted "Burnin' For You" by Blue Oyster Cult. Which means that the xander alternate submission would have finished somewhere higher than the actual submission. Xander is 1 for 3 and needs to second guess himself with more confidence.

In 4th place:

Objectively, this song is nowhere near being in the class of Burnin' For You or Light My Fire. However, this song grows on me and puts a bit of a smile on my face. It's a peppy little tune and it's interesting and it contrasts nicely with the lead singer's voice. This song kept coming on whenever I shuffled my playlist and I never felt the urge to fast forward to the next one.

Spoiler:
Outdrawed submitted "Fire Escape" by Fanfarlo.

I thought this next one was Dizzy's submission. This song is like a guilty pleasure for me. I know it's not at all the type of music I should like, but dang it, I do like it. I'm downright unpredictable like that.

Spoiler:
xander alternate submitted "Firewire" by Cosmic Gate and this is where it would have placed.

In 3rd place:

Well, the fire podium hit it out of the park. Any of the top 3 had a legit shot at the top spot.

This is a one-hit wonder, except their one-hit wasn't even really a hit at all. I'll link to their song from the early MTV days and I suspect that a bunch of you won't ever have heard it. This band is downright bizarre, but they're so bizarre that they're really, really cool. And I love the lead vocalists twang. And on top of it all, this is a cover song that completely departs from the original, while staying true to the original. Am I making any sense? Probably not.

Spoiler:
FerencL submitted "Ring Of Fire" by Wall of Voodoo.

And here's the song that you might remember by them. It's "Mexican Radio".

In 2nd place:

It's a band I like an awful lot performing a song I don't really know. There's a surefire formula for a podium if I've ever heard one. I could accuse the submitter of pandering, except he sent me his list before I ever posted a song by the same band for my choice of Earth songs. It's a typically fantastic tune by one of the best indy bands of the last 15 years.

Spoiler:
bwslim submitted "Lampshades On Fire" by Modest Mouse.

Our fire champion:

Here's what I said about the #1 Air song.
Quote:
This is the second category of the Walrus which was a runaway from the first listen. I've never heard the song and never heard of the artist. The voice is compelling and the drum beat is just right, but it's the guitar riff that pulls this song across the finish line. It's the kind of riff that makes me wish the song was another 10 minutes longer.
The fire winner was all of that but more. It's an epic toe-tapper of a song. Just a great tune and the guitar is fire. I'm definitely adding this band to my playlist and am hoping that they have a lot more music like this.

Spoiler:
JM3 submitted "Burning" by Whitest Boy Alive.

2nd works for me. Probably my favorite band that wasn't around in my formative years. Like them even more than Radiohead.

I'm trying to create a table like this for my POY pool.
I see you're just adding "table" in brackets before the data and "/table" in brackets after the data and you're getting 5 columns.
When I do the same, I get everything in one column.
What am I missing? Anyone?

Are you tabulating your scores in Microsoft excel? That's where I keep my data. Then when i copy and paste it here, I just put "table" before and after the data.

I suspect you're just inputting the data here rather than in excel first.

Thanks bolt2112. Yes, my data comes from a database program. Your data has hidden horizontal tabs. I'll try and insert horizontal tabs in my data to see if I can trick "table" into thinking it's a spreadsheet.
Thanks again.

you must have the table formatting on the same line as the first piece of data and the /table on the same line as the last piece of data or it won't work.

But you still need to put the horizontal tab character chr(9) between the data to make it work. If you add horizontal tabs then any data can be a table: it doesn't need to be a spreadsheet.
I wonder if there are any instructions on what other tags can be used here? I did make a table out of the top 500 players in my pool but it takes up a lot of space. Any tags to add scrolling?
And just to get back on topic for awhile.... I find it amazing that I'm in the top 3 having submitted a Chinese version of "The Wayward Wind" that had been deleted from YouTube! Thanks to bolt2112 for tracking down another copy of it and then not giving it a 9. Yes, that one was so far out of the box that you couldn't even see the box from there.

Let's finish this off with the giver of life.

Spoiler:
At first I thought my submission would be this underrated gem from my favorite Canadian progressive rock trio.

Spoiler:
Then I remembered this one from back in the 80's. The artist received all kinds of bad press for being a nitwit and he disappeared into obscurity, but this is still a great tune.

Spoiler:
And that would have been the end of it if I'd done this reveal a week ago. But I live in South Florida. And maybe you've been following the news. The weather channel, to be specific. So there's only one choice for my submission. Great artist. Great tune. Fits the category perfectly. And let's cross our fingers that Dorian heads due North and misses the Eastern seaboard entirely.

In 9th place:

I hate to be a nit, but I have to be a nit here. While I don't love this song, it doesn't deserve to be at the bottom of the podium based on its merit as a musical arrangement. It's pretty much a middle-of-the-pack tune. However, this is a big category miss and I have no choice but to put it in last place.

Spoiler:
JM submitted "Novocaine" by Fog Lake. And the unfortunate thing is, his message to me identified the song as "Fog Lake" by Novocaine. I double-checked the video. Then I googled both 'Novocaine' and 'Fog Lake'. And the band is definitely 'Fog Lake' and the song is definitely "Novocaine". Sorry, JM.

It strikes me that "Hurricane" is suitable for air, and not so much for water.
