I can’t think back to a specific time where Ervin articulated his approach to unlimited clues. I know he’s not hard and fast re: n-1, but not sure about unlimited.

Ervin literally clued “back” in a recent game to get “(meanwhile) back (at the) ranch,” so while well might miss tennis completely for us, not necessarily for Ervin.

I’m still stuck on the unlimited clue and I’m trying to figure out why it was made. In the middle game, what I posted above is true (guess the clear word/s the hit the clue undoubtedly and then run your list in order). In the end game, usually if you have only 2-3 words left, unlimited changes and tells you that the first word on your list isn’t yours (because otherwise n-1 would apply).

But we started this turn with 5 words left, so that leads me to think of it more as the former situation vs the latter.

tennis - 4 gets us Net/Palm/Tap/Crown with India as the n-1.

tennis - unlimited gets us Net + all the remaining words we’d discussed for Love in order + India for the last engagement word.

But again, Ervin. I’m trying to figure out whether he’s telling us well is correct with the unlimited clue or is merely avoiding n-1 because he doesn’t like the convention.

What do you think about crown as an RPG word? They have four left, and this was their list:

Looking back at the full list, I have nfi what their remaining words could be. Certainly not Net and Tap. And, if Crown isn’t theirs, do you think an RPG - 5 clue = Dice/Superhero/Eagle/Lion/Cap?

This is making me lean Well the more I read it. We weren’t on Crown at all, and he didn’t clue Crown hard in what he was hoping to be the close out clue. Well was brought up (by me, we didn’t discuss it much), but at least it was brought up. If he needed us firmly on Crown, he could’ve clued us there while still getting Net.

So now I think I’m on Well. And I won’t be surprised if it’s Crown. Or neither.

This is a game of communication with limited information. If we’re trying to finish things off and have never once mentioned one of the words, then it must be clued. The spymaster can’t just think “well, they haven’t mentioned it yet, but I’m not going to hard clue for it - hopefully they just guess it!”

the ideas for Love couldn't have gone much better, Ship was guessed for (relation)ship lol, I know I did the back (at the) ranch clue but come on!! That is clever though, and The Love Boat is 100% a thing. The Love Ship is pretty funny and thought it might get guessed but fine word to have out of the way/very good guess anyway. You had India lined up from it(+engagement for the arranged marriages before which was exactly the intention), Palm, Tap(obv), and Well which was the sketchy one.

Net wasn't on the radar so I needed to clue it and suggest you need NOTHING ELSE which is actually not that easy!!!

Was thinking things like swish(hint at well, but could hint at Scuba Diver), fish - same problem, mesh - gets Cap, flix - could get Superhero, pm'd eb asking if "." was a legal clue(intending . - unlimited) but we decided no...

came out with tennis because...everything else seemed better for other words...like Wimbledon for Crown exactly like you deduced...tennis was just a bleh net word...and you can always play tennis well
