Sandals were worn a lot in ancient times; maybe Rome is ours after all.

Sandals are traditional Japanese footwear (ninja)

Horseshoes are kind of sandally in that they don't cover the whole hoof/foot.

Hook maybe for your toes hooking the thongs?
