The instructions might seem difficult, and I am not good at explaining things, but the rules are not at all complicated. Here they are:
Goal: The goal of the game is to either be the last player standing.
Synopsis: You start the game with two characters in your hand, and proceed to accumulate money that you can use to perform actions on other players. You can also claim which characters you have. And you only have to show if you are called out.
Character Deck
Name | Ability | Quantity |
---|
Assassin | Pay 3 coins to assassinate target player | 3 |
Ambassador | Draw 2 characters from the deck. After looking at them, put 2 of your characters back. Block stealing | 3 |
Captain | Steal 2 coins from another player. Block stealing | 3 |
Contessa | Block an assassination attempt on yourself | 3 |
Duke | Take 3 coins from the Treasury. Block Foreign Aid | 3 |
Gameplay:
Phase 0: Draw your character- Every player receives two coins from the Treasury and two random characters from the Character Deck (find the Character Deck above).
- The Characters received by the players will not be revealed to the other players.
- If a player loses both Characters, they leave the Event.
Phase 1: Actions
When it is their turn, players may choose from the actions listed below.
- Take Income. Receive 1 coin from the Treasury. This can be neither challenged nor blocked.
- Request Foreign Aid. Receive 2 coins from the Treasury. This cannot be challenged, but someone could try to block it by claiming to have a Duke.
- Request Tax. Claim to have a Duke and receive 3 coins from the Treasury. This cannot be blocked but may be challenged.
- Assassinate. Claim to have an Assassin, pay 3 coins to the Treasury and remove a Character from another player. Maybe be challenged or blocked by the target, if the target claims to have a Contessa.
- Steal. Claim to have a Captain and steal 2 coins from another player. This can be challenged or blocked by anyone claiming to have an Ambassador or a Captain.
- Exchange. Claim to have the Ambassador, see the two top Characters from the deck, then reshuffle your Characters. After that, the deck is also reshuffled. This cannot be blocked but can be challenged.
- Exchange. Pay 7 coins to the Treasury and remove a Character from another player. If a player has at least 10 coins during their turn, they must select this action.
Phase 2: Claiming, Challenging and Blocking
- When a player claims, they are allowed to say the truth or lie. For example, a player can try to Request Tax (thus claiming to have a Duke) without actually having one.
- Once a player makes a claim, or performs an action that can be blocked, all the other players have 2 minutes to Challenge or Block that claim or action. In order to do, that simply write "challenge" or "block". First come, first served.
- By Challenging a claim, the challenger declares that the claim is false. If the claim is false, the claiming player will remove (and reveal to everyone) a character of their choosing from their hand.
- If the claim is true, the player that was challenging the claim will remove (and reveal to everyone) a character of their choosing from their hand. Then, the claiming player will remove the Character they used to make the claim and draw another one from the deck. Then the claiming player will perform the action they had claimed.
- By blocking someone, the player that is performing the blocking is making a claim. As usual, players may lie when blocking. As usual, that claim may be challenged, but this time, only by the original actor.
- If a player does not challenge a block, they may not perform further actions on their turn.
- If a player is blocking someone from stealing, they must specify whether you are Claiming Ambassador or Captain.
Notes:
- When a player removes a Character from their hand after losing a challenge, that character is NOT re-shuffled back into the deck.
- If a player claims an Assassination on another player, does not have the Assassin and is called on their bluff, that player will not pay 3 coins to the Treasury, since he is unable to perform that action.
- If a player claim an Assassination on another player, is challenged on that claim, and really does have an Assassin, the target of the Assassination is still allowed to try and block the Assassination by claiming Contessa.
