I guess Arctic did not say for certain he was in for 4 v 4. Can you confirm AK?

As of right now, I would propose the following:

1. Stick with Spur's rule set linked earlier in this thread, with the exception of two word proper nouns. One word is allowed, period. "Pitt" as in Brad Pitt can't clue for a word like "hole"
2. I'll rand this tomorrow morning, to give time for more people to join and/or to chime in about the rules. I'll rand both the teams and spymasters.
3. One word only, no hyphenated words.


As for the penalty for an invalid clue - in the real game the team's turn ends immediately and the other team gets a free word. In this case, it is possible one team could guess a few words from an invalid clue before the other team shows up or anyone protests.

Maybe the penalty is the other team gets to flip a word and the offending team auto-passes on their next turn?

Thoughts on any of the above?

the clue describes the word's meaning or context, not the word itself

you can't say "verb 3" for "run", "jump", and "shoot"

that kind of creativity is part of the fun of the game imo

I play a table-top version of this game with friends, and we don't require a spelling of the clue.

I don't necessarily mind a more liberal interpretation of the rules in theory. When playing in person it is a little easier to hash out problems before they become serious, like when several words are guessed from an invalid clue.

These rules are an effort to make things a little more black and white.

That said, I think the only things that are truly lame are rhyming clues and something like "third" to indicate the third word down. "Pitt" for "hole" is not so bad in comparison, so long as the rules are applied consistantly.

I think in the slow format you want about 4-5 on a team. But whatever. I'll rand a 3v3 for the first 6 tomorrow morning, and another game can be started from the remainder.

I'll be in the other game as well if you need it. I think you have ~5 now, not positive AK wants to play 3v3

We are now playing two games parallel
It would have been fun to use the same randed list in both games

Codenames is not always a fair game. I have had games with my kids where one side started with "Animal - 4". Playing it twice might make you feel good about a loss or feel bad about a win, because you performed better/worse than the other guy in the same spot.

When playing turbos sometimes we would have one spymaster rand and re-rand the list as many times as they wanted, and the other got to pick their color.

It would be interesting to have a league or tourney using the same words.
