I often wonder the same thing.

I saw timber a few weeks ago and it was (I think) trying to clue to piano. Same sort of idea. The words sound different and are spelled different and are closely talking about different things, but got the job done. I think it's fine.

Would argue that "kimono" for "dragon" is 100% illegal. Rules clearly state "Your clue must be about the meaning of the words".

Not sure how "timber" as a clue for "piano" is the same thing at all.

If you're going for Kimono > Kimodo that's no good.

But I think Kimono is a fine clue for Dragon as Kimono > Asian Culture > Dragon

What about "president" to get "link" (Abraham LINKoln)? Similar?

I am surprised how often these situations come up. That is, we could give a clue with multiple hints to the correct word. The most obvious connection is illegal, but there is another less direct connection that is in fact legal. But, the combined effect can be powerful.

Had an odd one the another night where a player was clueing Rushmore to get "link." Afterwards he mentioned that the faces are linked, but also there is Abe LINKen. So part of his reasoning is fine, and part is illegal..

I just wanted to stay away from anything on the edge so that is why I asked.

I retract my "100% illegal" comment. This would be a fine connection. The Abe LINKin one does not seem legit at all.
