i feel legit stupid. i'm clearly missing something obvious, and i don't know what it is

collar i assume is right, but i just can't find the last word

coat of ink? like a coat of paint? you could use sleeve to connect to clothing (collar) and tattoos though, so meh

if you're near an avalanche its cold and you need a coat. that doesn't connect to captain or tut at all, but maybe the 5 and 4 had an overlap or 2...

Red wins if the opening clue was Elephant - 5 instead of 4. I thought for sure BIAB was going for Trunk, Game, Squirrel, Duck and had completely missed Memory and I thought that’d be a really tough clue with the rest of their board. But then xander nailed Memory and I had no idea what was happening.

I’ll write something up for sure, but the best advice I can give you is twofold:
1. Always ensure you’re connecting words you know have to link to more than one clue.
2. Talk out your thought processes so the cluer knows what you’re thinking and why. This helps with subsequent clues.

Aaaaand we’re back

When I saw the Elephant - 4 I figured either Memory or one of the animal words was neutral (I hadn’t looked at the board yet and typically don’t when I’m blue until after the first red turn - just to get a sense of the opponent’s perception of the board difficulty). I wanted to try to win this in two, and knew an Egypt-like clue would be second for us and basically had two clear words and two that were a little stretchier. So I figured a five clue out of the gate felt about right. Ink was far away from the whole board pretty much, so I wasn’t too worried.

Captain - 5 was actually meant to be a 6 clue. I knew we had three easy ones with Jack, Revolution, Anchor. The loose connections were Cross (skull and cross bones - pirate connection), Collar (military insignia worn on a captain’s collar), and Avalanche (the first clue dmk ever gave me was NHL, so I thought maybe the hockey connection would hit). The reason I clued 5 instead of 6 was because I realized the stretchiness could end up leading to Ink (military-related tattoos). Definitely didn’t want that connection made.

I’m not sure what the 3rd word for cake - 3 was, but maybe it was to pick up Game with the food connection? Either way, I was feeling pretty good heading into the 2nd clue.

I wanted to make it clear that all words had been clued for. So, I went with Tutankhamen - 4. That way, you’d know that there needed to be some overlap and you could take the clear ones (Sphinx, Makeup) and know that they were pure Tut clues and then the other two Cross (ankh) and Collar (Tut’s bejeweled collar) were both Tut & Captain and the final word (Avalanche) was Captain only. Lots to parse, but that was my process.

Once I composed myself and realized you’d thankfully gone with Crystal first so our turn was over, I tried to figure out what to do if we got another turn. Giving them a word wasn’t great, but it wasn’t a complete disaster. Would love to hear what BIAB would’ve clued for Bath, Game, Crystal tho.

Then xander went with Whistle over Game, and we had another shot. I agonized over how to connect Avalanche and Collar. I almost went jacket - 2, but switched to coat - 2 just before posting. I NEEDED you to get off of Ink and I was prepared to ask you in postgame how you managed to connect that with Captain, Tutankhamen, and coat. But I didn’t have to ask:

Yes - exactly this. Remember it for every game moving forward. If you’ve been clued more than the number of words you have to guess, there is 100% an overlap somewhere. I legit clued for Collar three times this game.

I actually had memory in mind instead of duck, wanted as much non-food related words out of the way so game was actually the word I didn't really mind to be guessed.
Glad xander went duck > sphinx there though it didn't help in the end. Whistle and washer were kinda dangerous but couldn't really think of anything better. (Capitalised S was important in this case). Was flipping between pool (hole) and Steam (whistle).

Congrats and thanks for the games, ibd and dmk. Well guessed xander, I knew cherry and whistle were not unlikely to be your guesses but I wasn't seeing much better options there.

I thought of game and thought of the capital letter but when I saw elephant capitalised I didn't read into the capitalisation any further.
